Turbo power that outruns its price bracket

Every Emkoo sold in the UAE carries the same drivetrain: a 1.5-litre turbo four making 177 hp and 270 Nm, driving the front wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. That's a genuine turbo motor, not the low-output naturally aspirated engine most economy SUVs at this rate still use, and the difference is obvious the first time you need to close a gap on Sheikh Zayed Road. The DCT holds gears cleanly under load rather than flaring the way a CVT does, so overtaking at 120 km/h doesn't need a long run-up.

What you don't get is the badge recognition of a Hyundai or Kia. GAC runs one dealer network in the UAE, and parts, service history and resale value are all newer territory here than they are for a Tucson or Sportage. None of that touches you during a week's rental, but it's the honest reason this much engine costs less to book than a mainstream equivalent. You're renting the drivetrain, not the name on the tailgate.

What fits: cabin space, boot and the width at the wheel

At 4,680 mm long with a 2,750 mm wheelbase, the Emkoo has real room to work with, and most of that length shows up in rear legroom rather than styling flourishes. Two adults sit comfortably on a highway run, and a third across the middle bench is fine for a short trip, tighter for a full day with three grown adults in the back. The boot holds around 450 litres, enough for one large case and a soft bag or two, which covers two travellers flying into DXB or DWC for a week without leaving anything behind. A family of four with a full set of luggage will want to fold down part of the rear bench.

The width is the number to plan around. At 1,901 mm across, the Emkoo is wider than most compact crossovers in this class, and it's worth a second look before you reverse into an older Marina tower bay or a tight mall column. Ground clearance sits at 160 mm, enough for speed bumps and steep mall ramps without scraping, but this is a front-wheel-drive car on street tyres. The 250 km of daily mileage comfortably covers a there-and-back run toward Hatta if you want to see the mountains, but treat the road there, not the gravel beyond it, as where this car belongs.

Mileage, running costs and a white cabin in summer

GAC quotes combined fuel economy of around 6.4 L/100km for the 1.5T engine, a reasonable number for a turbocharged crossover with this much output on paper. Dubai driving asks more of any car than a lab test does, and with the AC running through a July afternoon plus stop-start traffic, expect something closer to 9 or 10 L/100km in practice. The 55-litre tank still stretches to around 550 km between fills at that rate, so a week of city driving plus a longer day out needs no more than a couple of stops.

The daily mileage allowance is 250 km, and anything past that is billed at AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, worth working out before a big day trip. The minimum age to rent this car is 25. Salik tolls charge automatically as you pass under a gate and land on your final bill, and any RTA fine picked up during the rental is yours to settle, not ours. On the cabin, white does the Emkoo a favour at midday: it reflects more of the sun than a dark colour would, so the interior doesn't build heat quite as fast in a parked lot. It still isn't a luxury climate system, and the front vents need a few minutes of driving to pull a baked cabin down to comfortable, so budget for that short wait before you judge it.

The right renter for this Emkoo, and who should book something else

Book the Emkoo if you want more engine than the standard economy SUV offers and the generous daily mileage matters to your plans, whether that's a week of city errands or a day trip that goes past the city limits. Two adults with a week of Dubai driving, an airport run or two, and the odd longer haul out of town, this car handles it with power in reserve that a 100 hp rival simply doesn't have.

Look at a Tucson, Sportage or Creta instead if the GAC badge itself gives you pause, if you want a car with a longer local service history, or if you're regularly carrying three adults across the back seat with full luggage. And if the plan involves gravel or dunes rather than paved roads, this front-wheel-drive SUV isn't the one to book. For a Dubai week built around streets, highways and the odd trip out toward the mountains, the Emkoo's mileage allowance and turbo engine do more for the money than its badge lets on.
