The new-generation engine, and how it drives

Ford stopped building the old Mustang shape after 2023 and started over with the S650, which is what this 2025 convertible is. The nose, the doors and the cabin are new rather than a mid-cycle refresh, and inside, a digital instrument cluster runs into a wide central touchscreen where the older car had small analogue dials and a much smaller display. If you have rented a Mustang from us before 2024, this one will feel like a different car wearing a familiar badge.

Under the bonnet is the 2.3-litre turbocharged four, sending about 315 hp to the rear wheels through a 10-speed automatic. Zero to 100 km/h takes around 5.5 seconds, quick enough that nobody will call it slow, and on Sheikh Zayed Road it settles into a fast cruise with plenty left for an overtake. Be honest with yourself about what you are buying, though. This engine is muted next to a V8, and with the roof down you will hear wind and road more than exhaust. Rear-wheel drive also means the back end can step out under a heavy right foot on a wet morning, so give the car a gentle first day before you lean on it.

A back seat for looks only, and a boot that doesn't shrink with the top

Ford still calls this a four-seat convertible, but that is generous. The front two seats are genuinely good, low and well shaped, while the rear bench suits a bag, a jacket or a small child rather than an adult who wants to arrive with any feeling left in their legs. Book this car for two people and it works exactly as intended. Book it hoping for a usable back row and you will be disappointed by the second stop.

The boot measures about 323 litres, enough for one large case and a soft bag, or a light two-person airport run. What is worth knowing is that this figure does not change with the roof position. The fabric top folds into its own well behind the rear seats rather than dropping into the boot the way some convertibles arrange it, so you do not lose luggage space to have the roof down for the evening. The car does sit low, with roughly 130 mm of ground clearance, so steep hotel ramps, tight mall entrances and the sharper speed bumps on the way to the Marina all want a slow, angled approach rather than driving straight over them.

A red convertible in summer, and the fuel it drinks

Red does not do you any favours at midday. It absorbs more heat than a white or silver car, though not quite as much as black, so expect the seats and the wheel to be properly warm if the car has sat closed in direct sun. As a convertible, the roof itself is really a dawn, evening or winter feature here rather than something you will use through a July afternoon. From November to March you can drive open for most of the day and enjoy it. Once the real heat arrives, keep the top down to early morning and after sunset, and never leave the roof folded on a car parked in the sun, because the interior cooks fast. With the roof up, the small cabin works in your favour. The AC is not fighting much air, so the front vents pull the temperature down quickly once you are moving, though the rear seats get noticeably less airflow.

On running cost, the EcoBoost four is the reason to pick this version over the V8. Figure on about 10 litres per 100 km in mixed city driving, and with the 59-litre tank that is well over 500 km before you need to stop, running on premium fuel. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's responsibility, and seat belts are required in every seat, front and back.

Who the new Mustang convertible fits, and who it doesn't

Book this Mustang if you are one or two people who want the new S650 shape, the open roof and a red car that gets looked at, without paying for a V8's fuel bill or carrying a heavier deposit. It is a genuine step up in looks and technology from the older-shape cars still on Dubai's rental fleets, and the four-cylinder keeps it easy to live with day to day.

Pass on it, or step up to the V8 GT, if the engine note is the actual point of renting a Mustang. The GT runs a 5.0-litre V8 with about 486 hp, and the sound at idle and under load is what most people picture when they picture this car, something the turbo four was never built to replicate. If your week means four adults or a real pile of luggage, skip both and take a sedan or an SUV, since the back seats and the firm ride will wear thin within a day.

A short note on the terms. Being a sports car, it rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking rather than a no-deposit deal, and you will need to be at least 25 to take the keys. The daily mileage allowance is 250 km, with extra kilometres at AED 0.5 each, generous enough for city driving and a day trip without watching the odometer too closely.
