The four-cylinder question: enough Mustang?

Under the bonnet is a 2.3-litre turbocharged four making about 315 hp, driving the rear wheels through a 10-speed automatic. On paper that's 0 to 100 km/h in around five and a half seconds, so nobody is going to call this car slow. On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles into a fast cruise and keeps plenty back for an overtake. In town, left in its normal mode, it's an easy, relaxed thing to drive.

The honest gap is the sound. A Mustang V8 is theatrical, and the EcoBoost four is muted next to it, so with the roof down you'll hear wind and road more than exhaust. If the noise is the whole reason you want a Mustang, this isn't the one, and the last section tells you where to go instead. Rear-wheel drive is the other thing to respect. The back end will step out if you're heavy with the throttle on a damp morning or over a painted line, so give the car its first day to earn your trust before you lean on it.

Everyday use, the boot and the back seats

With the roof up the AC has a small cabin to cool, so it pulls the temperature down quickly once you're moving and the front vents are strong, though the rear seats get little airflow. Park in shade where you can and use a windscreen sunshade. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you, and seat belts are required in every seat.

Who it suits, and who should hold out for the GT

Rent this Mustang if there are one or two of you who want the drop-top look and an easy weekend cruise, for a birthday, a photo run along the water or just to have something that turns heads on the daily errands. You get the shape and the open roof, and the EcoBoost keeps the fuel and the deposit sensible while it does it.

Hold out for the GT if the sound is the point. That car runs a 5.0-litre V8 with about 486 hp, and the deep idle and hard pull are exactly the soundtrack the four can't produce. It's the Mustang most people picture. And if your week means four adults or a full set of airport cases, step past both and take a sedan or an SUV, because the back seats and the firm ride will wear thin fast.

A few terms before you book. Being a sports car, it rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking, so plan for that rather than a no-deposit deal. You need to be at least 25 to take the keys, the daily allowance is 250 km, and extra kilometres are AED 0.5 each.
