Plenty of renters walk up to a Mustang assuming they need the V8 to enjoy it, and the 2022 Ford Mustang convertible we rent in Dubai is the car that quietly proves otherwise. We deliver it to your door in one to two hours, no deposit required, and rent it from age 18 when much of the market holds at 21. This is the 2.3-litre EcoBoost in black with a power soft top: a turbocharged four making 310 hp, rear-wheel drive, and a 5.8-second sprint to 100. The argument here is about the engine choice. For a week of cruising, open-top runs at golden hour and the occasional pull down Sheikh Zayed Road, the EcoBoost gives you the look, the noise and the speed without the V8's appetite. Who should still hold out for the eight-cylinder, we'll cover below.
The turbo four is the smart rental choice for most people, and it's worth knowing why. It pulls hard from low revs, so merging onto the E11 and overtaking on Sheikh Zayed Road take no planning, and 5.8 seconds to 100 is genuinely quick on any public road. What you give up against the V8 is the deep eight-cylinder soundtrack and the last slice of straight-line drama. For a Dubai week of cruising and showing the car off, that trade rarely bites. The EcoBoost also drinks less and sits in a lower rental bracket, so the money you save goes further than the soundtrack you miss.

The EcoBoost is the thrifty Mustang, but thrifty is relative to a muscle car, not a hatchback. Drive it gently and you'll see something close to 10 L/100km combined. Lean on it the way the car keeps inviting and city figures push past 11. On a roughly 61-litre tank that's a few hundred kilometres of mixed driving between fills, so you're not chasing stations mid-trip, but you'll see the pump more than in an economy car. Worth budgeting for before a week of spirited driving.
A convertible in Dubai is governed by the calendar and the clock. From November to March, dropping the top for an early coast run is one of the best things this car does, and that's its season. In peak summer, midday sun in the high 40s on black bodywork and a dark cabin makes top-down an ordeal the AC can't win. The fix is timing: roof down at dawn and dusk, roof up through the hot hours. With the top up the cabin is small, so the air conditioning pulls it back to comfortable faster than a big SUV would, though the first minute after a sunny park is still rough on the wheel. Vent the windows for thirty seconds, then close up and let the front vents work.
The Mustang is a 2+2, and the honest version matters. The front seats are roomy and comfortable for a tall driver. The two behind are a token gesture, knees in the seatback, head near the folded roof, fine for kids or a short hop and miserable for an adult on a cross-town run. The boot tells the same story at roughly 330 litres, with the folding roof eating into it, so plan on a medium case and a soft bag rather than full luggage for four. Around town the car asks for patience. At nearly 4.8 metres and low to the road, with about 137 mm of clearance, tight Marina ramps and aggressive speed bumps need a slow, square approach to spare the nose. Out on the highway it relaxes into a confident cruise with plenty held back for an overtake. Rear-wheel drive means the tail can step out on a rare damp morning, so ease in after rain, and remember Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are billed to you.
Rent it if you want open-top presence and real pace without the V8's fuel bill, you're travelling light, and you'll time the roof around the weather. Two people, the highway, the top down at golden hour, with the bonus of renting from 18 when most of the market won't, that's exactly its brief.
Hold out for the V8 only if the eight-cylinder soundtrack is the whole reason you're renting a Mustang and you don't mind paying for it at the pump. And skip the convertible altogether if you're moving four adults, carrying real luggage or doing daily errands across town in summer heat, where a sedan or crossover is cheaper and far less of a compromise. For the open-air drive most renters actually want, the EcoBoost is the sensible way into the legend.
