What's under the bonnet, and how it drives

The GCC-spec Bronco Sport for this year runs a turbocharged 1.5-litre EcoBoost three-cylinder, good for 181 hp and around 258 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. That's a modest output on paper, but the torque arrives low in the rev range, so pulling away from a Marina roundabout or merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road doesn't feel like work. It settles into a relaxed cruise once you're up to speed, though a three-cylinder engine this size runs out of enthusiasm past 120, and overtaking on the highway needs a proper run-up rather than a quick stab of the throttle.

The AWD system is genuinely useful on a wet roundabout after a rare downpour or a sandy shoulder near a beach car park, and it's part of what makes the Bronco Sport feel more planted than a front-wheel-drive crossover in the same class. It is not, however, the full Bronco's low-range transfer case. There's no crawling mode for dunes here, and Hatta's rockier tracks are past what this drivetrain is built to handle. It suits a couple or small family doing city driving, weekend trips toward Hatta's graded roads, and the odd airport run where the boot actually gets used.

Size down to a regular hatchback or sedan if it's just you running errands and the styling doesn't matter to you. You'll pay less to rent it and less to fuel it, and parking gets easier still. Size up to a proper body-on-frame 4x4, the full Bronco or something similar, if your plan involves real dunes or rocky Hatta trails, since this AWD crossover was never built for that kind of ground.
