Dongfeng Shine 2025 - start from 85 AED / day

The most common question we get when we hand this car over has nothing to do with the boot or the air conditioning. It's "who actually makes it?" So let's answer that first. The Dongfeng Shine 2025 rents in Dubai as an economy sedan from one of China's largest carmakers, with an official distributor and a service network in the UAE. We bring it to your door in 1 to 2 hours and we'll rent it to you from 18, which most desks here won't do. What this page helps you decide is whether an unfamiliar badge is worth a week of your time, and that comes down to what you save on fuel against what you give up in pace.

What a week of fuel actually costs you

This is the whole case for the Shine. The 1.5-litre petrol engine is naturally aspirated, which in 2025 makes it slightly old-fashioned and, for a renter, genuinely useful. There's no turbo to feed, so the consumption figure doesn't collapse the moment you drive it hard. The official combined number sits around 6.2 to 6.4 litres per 100 km, roughly 16 km per litre. Run it the way people actually drive in Dubai, with the AC on maximum and a lot of stop-start between Business Bay and wherever you're going, and 11 to 13 km per litre is the realistic range.

On a 50-litre tank that's somewhere between 550 and 650 km of city driving. A normal commuting week fits inside one fill. It takes regular 91 or 95, so you're never paying a premium at the pump.

The trade is pace. You get 123 hp and 158 Nm, and 13 seconds to 100 km/h tells you most of what you need to know. Around town it's completely adequate, and the six-speed dual-clutch automatic is smooth once you're rolling. At crawling speed, in a car park or edging through traffic, that gearbox can feel a bit hesitant compared to a conventional torque converter. It's a characteristic of the type, not a fault, and you stop noticing it after a day. On Sheikh Zayed Road the car sits at 120 without drama, but overtaking is something you plan rather than something you just do.

Space, and where the 4.67 metres go

The Shine is longer than most cars people expect at this rate. At 4.67 metres with a 2.68-metre wheelbase, it's closer in footprint to a Corolla than to the small sedans it competes with on price, and nearly all of that extra length has gone into the cabin and the boot rather than the bonnet.

The back seat is the surprise. Two adults sit behind two adults without negotiating, and for once the middle seat is usable on a short hop. The 454-litre boot takes two large hard cases and a cabin bag with room left over, which makes it a straightforward DXB or DWC pickup for a couple with a week of luggage. Three big cases plus a pushchair is where you start stacking, but that's true of every sedan at this size.

Length costs you something in the older multi-storey car parks around the Marina and the busier malls, where the bays were laid out for smaller cars. It's not difficult, just a car you reverse into rather than swing into. The 150 mm ground clearance is standard sedan height, so speed bumps and mall ramps are fine at sensible speed and rough ground is not this car's job. Salik tolls run on the car's tag and are billed to you, RTA fines during the rental are yours, and child seats are required for under-fours. Our rate includes 300 km a day, with extra kilometres at AED 0.5, which is enough that most renters never think about it.

How quickly it cools in August

This is a mid-size cabin with a lot of glass, so it takes a little longer to pull down from a baked car park than a small hatchback would. The front vents are strong and you'll be comfortable inside two or three minutes of moving. The practical trick applies here as much as anywhere: drop the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the superheated air before you ask the AC to do the work.

One honest caveat. Rear air vents are not standard across every car of this model, and we don't promise a specific interior spec on any booking. If you're carrying passengers in the back regularly through July and August, ask us what's fitted on the car we're bringing you and we'll tell you straight.

Who should skip it

Take the Shine if fuel cost and back-seat space are what you're optimising for, you're mostly driving in the city, and you don't mind being the person in the car park whose badge nobody recognises. For a family of four on a week's visit, or a resident who wants the cheapest genuinely comfortable automatic sedan we run, it's an easy recommendation. It's also a lot of physical car for an economy rate.

Skip it if you spend your days on the E11 and want something that overtakes on demand, because 13 seconds to 100 is slow and no amount of goodwill changes that. Skip it too if brand familiarity matters to you for a short trip. A Kia Pegas or a Nissan Sunny gives you a badge you already trust and a similar running cost, and the Honda City is the one to pick if you want a livelier engine and a more polished cabin for a bit more.

The Shine's argument isn't that it beats those cars everywhere. It's that it gives you more room and a bigger boot for the money, and it's a well-built enough thing that the unfamiliar badge stops mattering after about an hour behind the wheel.
