If the last Chevrolet Trax you rented felt like a slightly stretched hatchback, this one will surprise you. The Chevrolet Trax 2024 in our Dubai fleet is a full redesign, longer, wider and noticeably roomier than the subcompact Trax it replaces, built around a turbocharged three-cylinder that actually pulls with some conviction in traffic. We bring it to your door within one to two hours, and it suits renters who want SUV proportions and a manageable fuel bill without stepping up to a mid-size crossover. The real question on this page is whether the new Trax's size, and its unusual mileage terms, fit how you'll actually use it.

The engine, and how it drives

Under the hood is a 1.2-litre turbocharged three-cylinder making 137 hp and 220 Nm, paired with a conventional 6-speed automatic rather than the CVT most rivals in this class use. That's worth knowing if you've driven a Kicks or a Creta and found the CVT's constant, rubbery drone tiring on Sheikh Zayed Road. The Trax's gearbox holds a ratio and shifts with a defined step, which feels more like a normal automatic and less like a scooter. The turbo three brings real torque low in the rev range, so pulling away from a red light or merging onto the highway doesn't need flooring the pedal the way the old naturally aspirated Trax did. There's a faint three-cylinder thrum at idle, which is normal for this engine layout and settles down once you're rolling.

One change worth flagging if you remember the previous Trax: it offered an all-wheel-drive variant, and this generation is front-wheel drive only, at every trim. That's no issue for city driving or highway cruising, but don't read any desert capability into this car.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The cabin is where the redesign actually shows up. Chevrolet stretched the wheelbase by close to 140mm over the outgoing Trax, and most of that went into rear legroom, roughly three extra inches by Chevrolet's own figures. Two adults in the back now have real knee room on a DXB or DWC run, not just enough space to survive a short hop the way the old subcompact Trax demanded. Four adults with a full set of airport luggage is still tight in any car this size, but two adults and two kids, or four adults on a mall trip without heavy bags, works comfortably now, which the previous generation struggled with.

The boot has grown to match. It's a noticeably bigger load area than the outgoing Trax or a class rival like the Kicks, enough for two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags with the rear seats up, and folding the second row opens it out for flatpack furniture or a full grocery run. At 4.5 metres long and 1.8 metres wide it's bigger than a Kicks or Creta too, which mostly shows up when parking: it still fits standard mall and tower bays, but it's not the car that slips into the tightest basement spot without a second look. Ground clearance sits around 185mm, enough for speed bumps and steep ramp entries without scraping, but this is a road car on road tyres, not a Hatta or dune vehicle.

The mileage deal, fuel and cabin heat

Read the mileage terms before you book. The Trax comes with 4,500 km included for the whole rental, not per day. That's a real difference from most of our fleet, where the allowance resets daily. Book it for a week and 4,500 km is generous, more than 600 km a day if you actually used it all. Book it for a month and that same 4,500 km works out to about 150 km a day, which is tight if you're commuting across the city and adding weekend trips on top. Go over the total and it's AED 5.0 per extra km, noticeably steeper than the AED 0.5 to 1 per km charged on most economy and compact SUVs in our fleet, so it's worth tracking the odometer rather than assuming it will sort itself out at drop-off.

Fuel-wise the Trax is reasonable for its size. Official combined economy is about 7.8 litres per 100 km, and Dubai's stop-start traffic with the AC working hard pushes that closer to 8.5 or 9. The 50-litre tank still delivers 500 to 550 km of realistic city driving before you need to refuel, which for most renters means one stop a week.

The cabin cools at a fair pace for a car this size, not as fast as a small hatch but quicker than a full-size SUV with far more air to shift. Front vents pull hard once you're moving. Chevrolet doesn't fit rear air vents on this generation, even on the nicer trims, so back-seat passengers rely on air pushed through from the front and take a few extra minutes to feel it on the hottest afternoons. Park in shade where you can find it.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Trax if you want SUV height and real rear-seat room for two adults or a small family, and your trip is one where 4,500 km comfortably covers the driving, a week or two of city use, mall runs, the odd airport pickup, and some highway time. The 6-speed automatic is also worth having if you've found CVT crossovers tiresome on longer drives and want something that feels more like a normal car to steer.

Look elsewhere if you're renting for a month or longer with regular commuting, since the total mileage allowance won't stretch that far and the AED 5.0 overage adds up fast. Skip it too if you remember the old Trax's optional all-wheel drive and were hoping for the same here, or if your plans include Hatta or the dunes. This is a front-wheel-drive road car, and that's the whole story on capability. For everything else, ordinary Dubai driving with real space for passengers over a week or two, the new Trax does a better job than its old name might suggest, and delivery to your door in one to two hours means you're driving it the same day you book it.
