Every Traverse this generation carries the same 3.6-litre V6, 310 hp and 266 lb-ft (361 Nm) of torque, sent through a nine-speed automatic to the front wheels. There's no turbo lag to plan around and no small engine hunting for boost under a full load. Pull onto Sheikh Zayed Road with the third row occupied and the boot packed, and the V6 just answers, with the nine-speed shuffling down a gear or two for an overtake without ever feeling like it's working hard.

Front-wheel drive is the honest limit on this fleet car. Chevrolet did offer all-wheel drive on higher Traverse trims through this generation, but this one sends power to the front wheels only, so it belongs on tarmac and graded tracks, not soft sand or Hatta's rougher trails. Three rows, and what actually fits behind them

The badge suggests something smaller than it is. Open the doors and you get three real rows and seven seats, not a five-seat crossover with a bench squeezed in as an afterthought. The second row holds three across properly, and the third row has enough leg and head room for adults on a DXB run, which is the detail that actually separates a Traverse from a cheaper seven-seat rival. A Tahoe gets booked for exactly this kind of space, but a Traverse gets most people there just as comfortably, at a size that's noticeably less to manage in a car park.

Cargo tells the usual three-row story once the seats fill up. With all seven up, the boot holds about 651 litres, enough for a big grocery run or several soft bags, not seven hard suitcases stacked to the roof. Fold the third row and it opens to roughly 1,640 litres, comfortably two or three large cases plus carry-ons. A full cabin with the air conditioning working hard through a Dubai afternoon runs closer to 13 or 14, and the 73-litre tank still stretches to roughly 550 km across a normal week of mixed city and highway driving.

White is the easier colour to live with in this heat. It reflects more of the sun than a dark cabin would, so the dashboard and seats come back to a bearable temperature faster after a few hours parked outside. It still needs a couple of minutes of engine and AC running before everyone climbs in, and the third row, being furthest from the front vents, is always the last part of the cabin to properly cool. A car this size, even in a heat-friendly white, means hunting for a bigger bay and feeding a V6 for space you won't use, and a compact or mid-size crossover does the same job for less at the pump. If Hatta or genuine desert driving is part of the plan, this front-wheel-drive Traverse isn't built for it, so look at something with real all-wheel or four-wheel drive instead.
