The 5.3-litre V8 hasn't changed in four years, and that's the point

Chevrolet builds the GCC Tahoe around a 5.3-litre EcoTec3 V8 making 355 hp and 519 Nm, sent through a ten-speed automatic to all four wheels. A larger 6.2-litre V8 exists in Chevrolet's US range and turns up in the Cadillac Escalade, but every Tahoe in this fleet runs the 5.3, and four years of production have given GM plenty of time to sort out the early gremlins a brand-new platform usually carries. The torque sits low and holds flat, so pulling roughly two and a half tonnes away from a red light or onto Sheikh Zayed Road never asks the engine to strain, and the gearbox picks a ratio and stays there instead of hunting.

None of that makes the Tahoe exciting, and it isn't trying to be. Four-wheel drive is for grip on a wet road or a graded track, not an invitation to go looking for dunes, and around 203 mm of ground clearance shrugs off a firm desert road and every speed bump between here and the mall without turning either into an event. Past 100 km/h it settles rather than wanders, so a run to either airport or out toward the mountains doesn't feel like effort. Buying the 2024 over an earlier year in this same generation gets you that same settled character with less wear behind it, not a mechanically newer car.

Seven seats, a real boot, and where the cargo math breaks down

Seven seats come standard, split between two captain's chairs or a bench across the middle row, with an eight-seat layout available if you take the bench. What actually separates the Tahoe from most three-row crossovers is that the last row is sized for adults on a genuine trip, not kids tolerating ten minutes to the mall. The middle row slides and tips forward on its own, so nobody climbs over anyone to reach the back.

Cargo is the number that should decide a booking like this. There's 722 litres behind the third row, enough for a full group's cases on the drive in from the airport without anyone nursing a bag on their lap. Fold the third row down and that opens to roughly 2,056 litres, and fold the second row too and you're close to 3,480. Be realistic about where it stops working, though: seven people and seven full-size hard cases at the same time will still leave a soft bag or two riding in a footwell. Put kids in the back two rows instead of adults, and the boot stops being a limiting factor at all.

Black paint, the AC, and what a week actually costs at the pump

This Tahoe comes in black, and on a body this size that colour changes the first few minutes of every drive. Leave it parked at a mall or a villa driveway through a Dubai afternoon and the dash and front seats run noticeably hotter than they would on a lighter car. Climb back in, crack the windows and give the system a couple of minutes on full blower before it feels normal, that's the honest lag rather than a fault. Once it catches up, the third row gets its own vents, so cold air actually reaches the back instead of arriving as whatever drifts down from the front, which matters with six or seven people aboard on a mid-afternoon airport run.

Running cost lands mostly at the pump. Chevrolet's combined figure is around 14 litres per 100 km, but real city driving here, with the AC working hard against a black roof, tends to sit closer to 16 or 17. The 91-litre tank buys a long stretch between fill-ups, useful on a week that mixes city errands with a drive out toward the mountains. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental are the renter's to cover, and every seat needs a belt, with a proper child seat required for anyone under four. Size is the other daily cost: at 5,352 mm long and 2,057 mm wide, a tight Marina ramp or a compact mall bay wants folded mirrors and the reversing camera, and you'll lean on both more than once a day.

Who this year's Tahoe is for, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Chevrolet Tahoe 2024 if you're moving six or seven people with real luggage for a week, or your plans mix an airport pickup, long highway stretches and the odd desert-edge day trip. Few cars in this class carry that many people and that much cargo without forcing a compromise, and taking the newest year in the fleet is a reasonable way to get the lowest mileage on a car that hasn't changed underneath since 2021. If cabin finish and badge matter more than the extra dirhams, the Cadillac Escalade shares the same bones with a plusher interior. If every seat has to stay full and the luggage has to be maximum too, the longer Suburban is built for exactly that, and the Nissan Patrol is the closer size and presence match if you'd rather have a different badge on the same idea.

Look elsewhere if it's one or two of you running errands around the city. A five-metre SUV built to move seven people and cool a black cabin is wasted length, wasted fuel and wasted AC effort when nobody's using the back two rows. Your allowance on this car is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys. Book the Tahoe because the group and the load call for it, not because it's the newest one on the lot.
