A larger 6.2-litre V8 exists elsewhere in GM's range, shared with the Cadillac Escalade, but the Tahoe we rent runs the 5.3, and for most weeks here it's the right engine rather than the smaller option. Four-wheel drive means confidence on a wet road or a graded track, not a licence to go looking for dunes. Around 203 mm of ground clearance copes with a firm desert road and steep mall ramps without you worrying about the front lip, but this is a family and highway hauler, not a rock-crawler for Hatta's harder trails.

Running costs land mostly at the pump. Chevrolet's combined figure is around 14 litres per 100 km, and real city driving in Dubai, with the AC working hard, tends to sit closer to 16 or 17. The 91-litre tank means you're not stopping every other day, and Salik tolls on top are the same modest add-on they are with any car we hand over, paid by whoever is driving.

Three rows, and what fits behind them

Seven seats come standard, usually two captain's chairs in the middle row and a bench across the back, and the third row is where the Tahoe separates itself from smaller three-row crossovers. Adults sit back there for a real airport run or a drive up the coast, not just children on a ten-minute hop. The middle row slides and tips forward, so getting into the last row doesn't turn into a wrestling match at every stop.

Luggage is the number that actually decides a booking like this. Behind the third row sits 722 litres, enough for a full group's suitcases on a DXB or DWC pickup, where most seven-seaters make you choose between passengers and cases. Fold the third row and that opens to around 2,056 litres, fold the middle row too and you're close to 3,480. The honest limit is the one every three-row SUV hits eventually: seven people and seven hard cases at once still means a soft bag or two in the footwells. For two adults, three kids and a week split between the beach, the mall and the airport, nothing at this size and price packs this easily.

A black cabin, and what the AC does about it

Heat is the real cost of a black cabin this size, and it's worth being honest about rather than glossing over. A dark body soaks up more sun than a white or silver one, so after a few hours parked at a mall or a villa driveway in July or August, the dashboard and seats run noticeably hotter than they would on a lighter Tahoe. Climb back in and the system needs a few minutes, windows cracked and blower on high, before the cabin drops to something comfortable. That's normal for a vehicle this size and colour, not a fault.

Once it catches up, the Tahoe's climate system holds its own. The third row gets its own vents, so cold air actually reaches the back rather than arriving as whatever drifts from the front, which matters with seven people and mid-forties afternoons outside. If you're booking with young kids, plan for that first five minutes: crack the windows on approach, start the engine before loading the car seats, and let the system pull the worst of the heat out before anyone straps in. RTA rules require a proper child seat for anyone under four, and seat belts for every seat, front and back, which is easy in a cabin this size since nobody has to squeeze.

Who should rent it, and who should size down
