Those numbers do not sound dramatic next to newer turbocharged rivals, but the way the engine delivers them is what you notice from the driver's seat. It does not need to rev to move two and a half tonnes of truck-based SUV off the line or up the ramp onto Sheikh Zayed Road. The torque arrives early and stays flat, so overtaking on E11 or merging from a slip road never feels like you are asking too much of it.

There is a bigger 6.2-litre V8 elsewhere in GM's range, the one Cadillac uses in the Escalade, but the Tahoe we rent runs the 5.3, and for most weeks in Dubai that is the right engine rather than a compromise. It hauls the weight without strain and burns a bit less fuel doing it. Read the four-wheel drive as extra grip on a wet road or a graded desert track, not an invitation to go chasing dunes. This is a road and family hauler that shrugs off a firm track on the way to Hatta, not a car built to crawl over rock.

Three rows, and what fits behind them

Seven seats come standard, usually two captain's chairs in the middle row and a bench across the back, with an eight-seat bench-middle layout also available. The third row is where the Tahoe separates itself from the smaller three-row crossovers most rental fleets offer. Adults ride back there on a real trip across the city, not just kids tolerating it for ten minutes, and the middle row slides and tips forward so climbing in does not turn into a production at every stop.

Luggage is the number that actually decides a booking like this one. Behind the third row sits 722 litres, enough for a full group's cases on a DXB or DWC run, where most seven-seaters force a choice between passengers and bags. Fold the third row down and that opens to around 2,056 litres, and with the middle row folded too you are close to 3,480. Fuel, heat and parking something this large

A V8 this size has a running cost, and it shows up at the pump. The 91-litre tank means you are not stopping every other day, but budget the fuel properly rather than assume a big tank means cheap running. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental are on the renter, the same as with any car we hand over.

Heat is the question every renter asks about a cabin this size, and the Tahoe copes with it well. The climate system pulls a parked cabin down steadily rather than in one dramatic blast once you climb back in from a hot car park, and the third row gets its own vents, so it is not just warm air drifting back from the front by the time it reaches the last seat.

Parking is the daily trade-off that comes with a car this long. At 5,352 mm and just over two metres wide, a tight Marina ramp or a compact mall bay wants mirrors folded and a bit of patience, and you will lean on the reversing camera more than once a day. The upside is around 203 mm of ground clearance, so speed bumps and steep ramps become something you stop noticing rather than creep over. Past 100 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road it settles rather than wanders, so the run to either airport, or out toward the mountains with the whole group aboard, does not feel like work.

Who should rent it, and who should size down

Rent the Chevrolet Tahoe 2023 if you are moving six or seven people with real luggage between them, or if your week mixes airport pickups, highway distance and beach or desert-edge day trips as a group. Few cars in this class carry that many people and that much cargo with so little compromise. If you need every seat full and maximum luggage at once, the longer Suburban is built for that load. If cabin polish and a badge matter more than the extra dirhams, the Cadillac Escalade or GMC Yukon share the same bones with a plusher interior.

Size down if it is one or two of you running errands around the city. You will spend the week parking a five-metre SUV and feeding a V8 for space you never use, when a mid-size crossover handles that job for less. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, and you will need to be 25 to take the keys. Book the Tahoe for the group and the load, not for how it looks parked outside the villa.
