A bigger 6.2-litre V8 exists elsewhere in GM's range and turns up in the Cadillac Escalade, but the Tahoe we rent runs the 5.3, and it is the right engine for what most renters actually do with this car: highway miles, airport runs, the occasional graded track. Four-wheel drive here means grip in the wet or on a firm desert road, not a standing invitation to chase dunes, and around 203 mm of ground clearance takes speed bumps and mall ramps in stride without turning them into an event. Treat the Tahoe as settled and composed rather than exciting, because that is the job it is built for.

Seats, boot and the honest cargo trade-off

Seven seats are standard, split between two captain's chairs or a bench in the middle row and a genuine third row behind, with an eight-seat bench-middle layout also available. What sets the Tahoe apart from most three-row rivals is that the back row is built for adults on a real trip, not children tolerating ten minutes to the mall. The middle row slides and folds forward on its own, so nobody climbs over anybody to reach the last seat.

Cargo is the number that should decide this booking. The 91-litre tank means you are not stopping every other day, but budget the fuel properly rather than assume a big tank equals cheap running. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental are the renter's to cover, and every seat needs a belt, with a proper child seat required for anyone under four.

Parking is the part you deal with daily, not once. At 5,352 mm long and 2,057 mm wide, a tight Marina ramp or a compact mall bay wants folded mirrors and the reversing camera, and you will use both more than once a day. Past 100 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road the Tahoe settles rather than wanders, so the run to either airport does not feel like work once you are clear of the car park.

Who this Tahoe suits, and who should size down
