GM builds a larger 6.2-litre V8 for the range, shared with the Cadillac Escalade, but the Tahoe we rent runs the 5.3, and for a family week here it's the sensible engine rather than a lesser one. Four-wheel drive adds security on a wet road or a graded track rather than an invitation to chase dunes, and around 203 mm of ground clearance shrugs off speed bumps and steep mall ramps without you thinking about the front lip. This is a family and highway hauler that copes with a firm desert road, not a rock crawler built for Hatta's harder trails.

Seven seats, three rows, and where the family's luggage goes

Seven seats come standard, usually two captain's chairs in the middle row and a bench across the back. The third row is the part that actually matters for a family week, because it seats adults properly rather than folding them in for a ten-minute hop. Grandparents can ride back there on a day trip without complaint. The middle row slides and tips forward on its own, so getting into the last row doesn't turn into climbing over knees at every stop.

Luggage is what decides whether the week works. That's ordinary for a dark SUV this size, not a fault. Once the system catches up, it holds its own, and the third row gets its own vents, so cold air actually reaches the grandparent in the back seat rather than arriving as whatever drifts from the front. At 5,352 mm long, tight Marina ramps and compact mall bays want mirrors folded and a bit of patience, but the clearance makes speed bumps and steep driveways a non-event.

Who this Tahoe is built for, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Chevrolet Tahoe 2023 if your week genuinely fills three rows most days, not just for one transfer, and you'd rather keep everyone in one car than split a family or a group between two. Few cars in this bracket seat that many people and still leave room for a week's worth of family gear.
