The Tahoe is body-on-frame, built on the same bones GM uses for the Suburban and the Cadillac Escalade, so it's a proper truck-based SUV rather than a tall crossover. Under the bonnet sits the 5.3-litre EcoTec3 V8, 355 hp and 519 Nm, driving all four wheels through a ten-speed automatic. On the move that means easy, unstressed torque. You don't have to work the engine to merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road or to clear a slow lorry, it just leans on the torque and goes.

There's a bigger 6.2 V8 in the range, but the car we rent runs the 5.3, and it's the one most people should want anyway. It shifts two and a half tonnes without fuss and drinks a little less doing it. Read the four-wheel drive as confidence in the wet and the odd graded track, not as a licence for serious dune work. The Tahoe is a road and family hauler that copes with a firm desert road, not a rock-crawler.

Three rows, the boot and the family week

This is where the length earns its keep. The Tahoe seats seven or eight, depending on whether the middle row is captain's chairs or a bench, and unlike a lot of three-row SUVs the back row is usable by adults, not just kids on a short hop. The second row slides and tips, so climbing into the third isn't a wrestling match, and nobody draws the short straw on the way to dinner.

Luggage is the real headline. Behind the third row you get around 722 litres, large enough to take a full group's airport run where most seven-seaters make you choose between passengers and cases. Fold the back row and it opens to roughly 2,056 litres, and drop the middle too and you're near 3,480. The honest limit is the one every three-row SUV hits: seven aboard and seven hard cases at once will still leave you tucking soft bags into footwells. For two adults, three or four kids and a week of mall runs and beach days, though, nothing at this money packs easier.

Fuel, heat and the size on Dubai roads

The V8 has a bill, and it lands at the pump. Chevrolet's combined figure sits around 14 litres per 100 km, but real Dubai driving runs higher, closer to 16 or 17 in stop-start traffic with the AC working hard. The 91-litre tank gives you a long run between fills, so you're not forever at the station, but budget for the fuel over a week. Heat is the question every renter asks, and a cabin this size needs a strong system to beat a July afternoon. It has one. The climate control pulls the temperature down steadily after hours parked in an open lot, and rear passengers get their own vents, so the third row gets real cold air rather than whatever drifts back from the front.

Size is the daily trade. At about 5.35 metres long and just over two wide, tight multi-storey bays and Marina tower ramps want patience and the parking cameras. The flip side is roughly 203 mm of clearance, which turns speed bumps and steep mall ramps into things you stop noticing. Above 100 it stays settled and quiet, so DXB and DWC runs or a drive out to the mountains never feel like hard work.

Who should rent it, and who's over-buying

Rent the Chevrolet Tahoe 2022 if you're a big family or a group travelling with luggage, or if your week mixes airport runs, seven passengers and long highway miles. Little else in this bracket carries people and cargo with so little compromise, and it hands you most of an Escalade's space for less money. If you want the same room dressed up with a luxury cabin and a badge, that's the Escalade. If you need maximum luggage with every seat full, the longer Suburban is built for exactly that.

Skip it if it's one or two of you running city errands. You'll spend the week parking a five-metre SUV and feeding a V8 for space you never fill, when a mid-size crossover does that job for far less.
