The trade-off lives in the access. Climbing into row three is easy through the wide rear doors, but the very back is a stretch for older passengers. If most of your group is adults staying in for hours, an eight-seat layout with captain's chairs in the middle is more comfortable than cramming three across.

For an airport transfer with a big group and a lot of luggage, nothing in the class beats it. For four adults and city errands, it's far more SUV than you need, and a seven-seat crossover will park easier and drink less.

Fuel, and how often you'll stop

A big V8 moving 2.5 tonnes is thirsty, and Dubai's stop-start traffic is the worst case for it. Plan on 5.5 to 6.4 km per litre around town. The upside is the 106-litre tank: even at that thirst, you're looking at roughly 900 to 1,200 km of range, so a week of city driving usually means two fills, not a daily ritual at the pump. Out on Sheikh Zayed Road at a steady cruise the figure improves, but no one rents a Suburban to save fuel. If running cost is the deciding factor, this is the wrong car and you already know it.

Heat, and cooling a cabin this big

A parked Suburban at 45°C is a large oven, and the volume of air to cool is the real test. The tri-zone climate system has front, rear and third-row vents, so once it's running, every row gets airflow rather than the back two baking while the driver is comfortable. Expect the first few minutes after a midday start to feel slow simply because there's so much cabin, then it settles. Park in shade or a basement when you can, drop the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the worst of the heat, and the rear passengers won't suffer. That third-row vent matters more here than in any shorter SUV, because that's the seat that gets forgotten in lesser systems.

Living with the length in Dubai

This is where you have to be realistic. At nearly 5.75 metres, the Suburban is long for tight multi-storey bays and Marina ramps. Many older car parks have bays sized for a sedan, and you'll occasionally find the nose or tail poking into the aisle. Valet and surface lots are your friends. The 203 mm of ground clearance handles speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping, and the high seating gives a commanding view over traffic, which helps on Sheikh Zayed Road. U-turns need a wider arc, and reverse parking takes patience, though the cameras and sensors do most of the work.

A few Dubai rules to keep in mind. Salik tolls are billed to you as the renter, as are any RTA fines, so keep to the limits. Seat belts are mandatory in every row, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit on request.
