Drop the top on a Chevrolet Camaro 2020 and you get the open-air muscle car moment without the V8 price tag attached to it. We hand this one over at your hotel, villa or the airport, in black with the roof ready to fold, usually within one to two hours of booking. It runs a 3.6-litre V6 in GCC spec, not the turbocharged four that some international spec sheets list for this generation, and that distinction decides whether this convertible is the smart route into a Camaro or a car you outgrow by day three.

The V6, and what it's like with the roof down

Worth clearing up before anything else: this Camaro runs a naturally aspirated 3.6-litre V6, not a turbo four. Chevrolet never sold the turbocharged four-cylinder Camaro in the GCC; local buyers got the V6 or the 6.2-litre V8 SS, nothing smaller. In GCC tune the V6 makes 323 hp at 6,800 rpm and 278 Nm of torque at 4,800 rpm, through a 10-speed automatic to the rear wheels.

That is plenty for what a convertible rental is actually for. The power soft top lowers itself in around 20 seconds at the push of one button, and you can raise or drop it on the move at speeds up to about 48 km/h, handy for beating a sudden dust haze without pulling over. With the roof stowed, wind buffeting picks up once you are past 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road but stays manageable with the windows up, and the V6's exhaust note actually carries better in an open cabin than it does through the coupe's roof. It is not a quick car by sports car standards, but it pulls off the line cleanly and the 10-speed keeps it in the right gear for a confident overtake.

Two-plus-two space, and the convertible boot

Four seats is generous phrasing here. The back is a 2+2 for a bag or a short ride with someone small, and the folded-roof mechanism trims what little rear headroom the coupe already struggles with, so plan for two people and occasional company rather than a family of four.

The boot is where the convertible gives something up for the theatre. At around 207 litres it is noticeably tighter than the coupe's 257 litres, because the stowed roof permanently claims part of the trunk whether it is up or down, not just when you lower it. One large case fits without a fight; a second needs to be a soft holdall wedged in at an angle, and three cases for two people flying into DXB simply is not realistic in this car. Pack light, or split the luggage with hand baggage in the cabin.

Heat, the cabin and running costs

Leave the roof up and park in the sun for a few hours at 45 degrees and the black paint does you no favours. The cabin will be genuinely hot when you climb back in, more so than in a hardtop coupe because the fabric roof insulates less than steel. The front vents pull the temperature down fast once the AC is on max with the doors shut, usually within a couple of minutes, but give it that long before expecting the cabin to feel normal. Rear airflow is weak, one more reason the back seats stay a short-hop proposition rather than somewhere anyone wants to sit through a July afternoon.

Fuel economy sits around 10.9 km per litre for the V6, and the 72-litre tank is good for roughly 780 km between fills on a mix of city and highway driving, reasonable for a car with this much road presence. Salik tolls and any RTA fines land on the renter, standard across the fleet, and this engine is happier on premium fuel than regular. Your daily allowance is 250 km, with anything past that charged at AED 0.5 a kilometre, which comfortably covers a week of city driving and one longer run without watching the odometer.

Who should rent it, and who should size to the V8

Rent the V6 convertible if the point of the week is arriving with the roof down, not outright pace. It is relaxed enough for daily driving, easy to place in traffic despite the long nose, and turns heads parked outside a Marina hotel at sunset with the top folded away. Two adults with carry-on bags are the sweet spot; a third or fourth passenger and real suitcases push it past what the car is built for.

Size up to the V8 SS if you want the exhaust note and the shove to match what the body promises. It makes around 455 hp from a 6.2-litre engine and sounds like it means it at idle, which the V6 never quite manages. If the plan involves flooring it on an empty stretch of highway after dark, that is the car for it, not this one. Either way, this is a sports car rather than an economy hire: a refundable security deposit applies at pickup, there is no no-deposit option on this class, and you need to be at least 21 with a valid licence to take the keys. Choose the V6 convertible for the roof-down experience at a sensible price, and save the V8 for when the sound itself is the point.
