Three across the second row is comfortable, and the rearmost pair get real legroom and their own air vents. For a family of six or a group heading out together, nobody's drawing the short straw.

The caveat is luggage. With all seven seats up you've got roughly 722 litres behind the third row, fine for a weekend of soft bags but tight if seven people each bring a full case. Drop the third row and you open up to around 2,000 litres. Fold everything flat and it's a cavernous 3,400 litres or so. For an airport run with a full house and full suitcases, plan to use that third row for cargo or people, not both.

Now the part nobody on a brochure tells you. A V8 this big drinks. Expect somewhere in the region of 14 to 16 litres per 100 km in mixed Dubai driving, more if you sit in Marina traffic with seven aboard and the AC at full tilt. The 91-litre tank gives you a sensible range between fills, but you will visit the pump more often than you would in a smaller SUV. Budget for it. If fuel cost is going to bother you all week, the Escalade isn't your car.

Parking a car this large in Dubai

At 5.38 metres long and over two metres wide, the Escalade is a big thing to thread through a multi-storey. Tight bays in older malls and the narrow ramps at some Marina towers take care and a few extra mirror checks. The flip side is that the cameras and sensors on this generation are genuinely good, the surround view makes squeezing into a bay far less stressful than the size suggests, and the high seating position helps you place the corners.

The 203 mm of ground clearance clears speed bumps and steep mall entrances without scraping. It's all-wheel drive, so a graded desert track or a beach access road is within reach, but this is a road-biased luxury SUV, not a dune basher. For serious soft sand you'd still want a proper off-roader. For everything a Dubai week throws at it, including the occasional rough track to a desert camp, it copes.

Staying cool when it's 45 outside

A cabin this large is a lot of air to cool, so this matters. Left in the sun through a Dubai afternoon it bakes like anything else, but the Escalade's climate system is strong and, importantly, it's tri-zone with vents feeding all three rows. The second and third rows get their own outlets, so passengers in the back aren't left sweating while the front stays comfortable. Give it a couple of minutes moving and the whole cabin settles. For a full load of people in summer, those rear vents are the feature that actually matters.

The running costs that fall to you

Salik tolls are charged to you as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental period are passed on to the renter, so keep an eye on the speed on the E11.
