The first decision on a BMW Z4 2022 is which engine sits behind that long bonnet, and we rent both across Dubai with payment kept flexible and settled on delivery. You can have the sDrive30i with its 255 hp turbo four, or the M40i with a 3.0-litre TwinTurbo straight-six pushing 382 hp. Both are strict two-seat soft-top roadsters, both send drive to the rear wheels, and both look the part on a coast road at dusk. Our argument is about that choice. For most renters the four-cylinder is plenty of car; the M40i is for the driver who specifically wants the six-cylinder noise and the extra shove, and is happy to feed it more fuel to get them.
The sDrive30i's 2.0-litre turbo makes 255 hp, and that is not a slow car. It pulls away cleanly and has the mid-range to settle an overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road without drama. For evening cruises and weekend runs it does everything the Z4 is for.
The M40i is a different animal. The straight-six adds a smoothness and a sound the four can't reach, 382 hp puts real urgency underfoot, and it reaches 100 km/h in a shade over four seconds. On the E11 it never feels like it's working. If the drive itself is the reason you're renting, that's the engine. If you mainly want the open roof and the looks, save the money and take the four.

The tank holds 52 litres whichever engine you pick, and that shapes your week more than the horsepower does. Drive the sDrive30i normally and you'll see high 7s to low 8s per 100 km, so a tank covers several days of evening drives and short hops. The M40i asks for more the moment you lean on it, and a hard weekend can drop you into double figures. Neither car sits in traffic much the way most rentals do, so range rarely becomes a worry. One fill usually sees out a normal week, maybe two if you spend real time on the highway with the six.
The soft-top is the point, and it opens or closes in seconds even while you're rolling at low speed. The catch in Dubai is when to use it. From roughly November to March the early mornings and the hours after sunset are made for roof-down driving along the coast. In peak summer, with afternoons in the high 40s, the roof stays up most of the day and you let the AC do its work. The cabin is small, so it cools quickly once you're moving; crack the windows for the first minute after a long park to dump the trapped heat, then the front vents catch up fast. There are no rear seats to worry about, so all the cold air lands where you're sitting.
The boot holds 281 litres, which is honest weekend space and no more. Two soft holdalls and a backpack fit; two hard cases and a week of shopping don't, and the folded roof eats into what's there. For an airport pickup at DXB or DWC it works for two travellers with carry-on, not a full party with suitcases. With two seats there's also simply nowhere to put a third person.
At 4.3 metres the Z4 is short and easy to place in a tight multi-storey bay or on a Marina ramp. The low front lip is the thing to respect on steep mall entrances and sharp speed bumps, so take those straight and slow. Roof up, the over-shoulder view narrows the way it does in any roadster, so lean on the mirrors when you reverse. Salik tolls you pass are billed to you, and any RTA fine during the rental is yours to settle.
Rent the sDrive30i if you want the Z4 experience, the open roof and the sharp rear-drive chassis, without paying to feed a bigger engine. It's the sensible pick for a couple chasing style and a few cool-night coastal drives. Step up to the M40i only if the six-cylinder pace and sound are the reason you're here; it's noticeably quicker and more special, and it costs more to run for it.
Skip the Z4 in either form if you need to carry more than one passenger or move real luggage. Two seats and a 281-litre boot make that call for you. For open air with room for people, a four-seat convertible is the sensible swap; for a fixed roof and a proper boot, a coupe. Want a genuine two-seat roadster for the drive itself, and this is exactly the car, whichever engine you land on.
