If you're a couple or a solo driver who wants a quick, good-looking convertible for coastal evenings and weekend escapes, the Z4 is the car. If you need to carry people or luggage, it isn't, and we'll tell you what to take instead.

What the Z4 is built to do

The 2.0-litre turbo sends 258 hp to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic, and 0 to 100 lands in 5.4 seconds. On Sheikh Zayed Road that means an overtake happens the moment you ask for it, with a strong band of mid-range that never feels strained at a cruise. The steering is quick and the body stays flat through a fast sweeper, so the Z4 rewards a good road rather than just posing on a hotel forecourt. Sending the power to the back wheels gives it a balance and a keenness to turn in that the front-drive convertibles can't match.

It's a soft-top rather than a folding hardtop, which keeps the weight low and the handling sharp. The trade is a snug, low cabin built strictly for two. There's no back seat to lean on, so treat it as a weekend toy, not a do-everything rental.

Luggage and fuel for a real week

The boot holds 281 litres, which in plain terms is weekend bags only. A couple's soft holdalls and a backpack fit fine. Two hard cases and a week of shopping do not, and the roof mechanism eats into the space when it's stowed, so pack soft and pack light.

On fuel, the official combined figure is around 6 litres per 100 km, but nobody rents a roadster to drive gently. Expect closer to 8 or 9 in mixed Dubai driving with some enthusiasm. The 52-litre tank still gives a comfortable range, so a normal week of evening cruises and short hops is one fill, maybe two if you spend real time on the highway.

Parking, the low nose and Dubai bumps

The Z4 sits low, and that's the thing to manage in a city of speed bumps and steep mall ramps. Its compact length makes it easy to slot into a tight multi-storey bay, and visibility roof-down is excellent for placing it. The low front end deserves respect though, so take aggressive bumps and ramp lips straight and slow and you'll be fine. Roof up, the over-shoulder view tightens, as it does in any roadster, so lean on the mirrors and sensors when you reverse.

For airport runs, a quick hop to DXB or DWC works for two travellers with carry-on bags and no more. This is a car for the drive, not for ferrying a party with their cases.

Roof down, and surviving the heat

Here's the honest version of open-air motoring in Dubai. From roughly November to March, roof-down driving is the whole point, and early mornings and evenings are superb. In peak summer, with daytime heat in the high 40s, the roof stays up most of the day, and because the cabin is small the AC pulls a parked, baking interior down fast. Drop the top for a coastal evening once the sun is gone and the air has cooled and it's glorious. Try it at 2pm in July and you'll regret it within a block. The roof raises and lowers in seconds even at low speed, so you're never locked into one choice for the whole drive.

A couple of standing rules apply to every rental here. Salik tolls run on your account for the week, and any RTA fines during the rental are passed to you. Seatbelts are mandatory, which in a two-seat car is the whole cabin.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Z4 2021 if you're a couple, a solo driver who loves a good road, or anyone planning a stylish weekend and a few top-down coastal evenings. It looks superb, it's quick, the rear-drive chassis is a treat, and an open-air drive on a cool night is the reason it exists.

Skip it if you need space. Two people with a lot of luggage, or anyone who has to seat a third or fourth, is fighting the car's whole design. For more room with similar style, a coupe gives you a usable boot and a fixed roof. If you want open air but also need to carry people, a four-seat convertible is the sensible swap. For everyone else chasing fun and sun for two, the Z4 is exactly the right call.
