The engine, and how it drives

It's the quicker of the two four-cylinder Z4 engines sold in the GCC, and it feels it: strong low in the rev range, so it pulls cleanly out of Marina traffic without much throttle, and it opens up properly once you're past 3,000 rpm on a clear stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road. Rear-wheel drive with nothing but standard stability control between you and the road means a heavy foot on a wet lane or a freshly painted line can step the back out, so give the first few kilometres some respect before you lean on it. BMW quotes combined fuel economy around 6.0 to 6.1 L/100 km. Expect that to climb once the air conditioning is working against a 45-degree afternoon, so plan a realistic week around 7 to 8 L/100 km rather than the brochure figure.

Two seats, a small boot and what actually fits
