It corners far flatter than something this tall has any right to, so a fast run out toward Hatta or Abu Dhabi stays composed rather than wallowing.

Be honest about the flip side. This is a firm M car, and the ride never fully lets you forget it. Patched side streets and expansion joints come through with a hard edge that a standard X5 smooths over. It's the price of the body control, and most renters make peace with it, but if pillowy comfort is your priority, this isn't the SUV.

The practical side: space and boot

This is where the X5 M earns its keep against the X6 M. The coupe roofline on the X6 looks sharper and steals rear headroom and boot shape to get there. What it costs to run, plus heat and cabin

This is a fast SUV, not an economical one, and nobody should book it expecting otherwise.

On the heat, the cabin cools quickly for its size. The climate system is strong front and rear, with proper vents for the back seats rather than a trickle drifting off the dash, which counts when the black paint has been baking in a 48-degree July car park. The first minute after a long park is the warm one, then it recovers fast. Cooled front seats take the edge off on the worst days.

Size asks for a little care. At just over two metres wide across the mirrors, a tight Marina tower bay or a narrow mall multi-storey means folding the mirrors and taking your time, though the cameras and sensors do most of the work. The M suspension sits lower than a standard X5, so take steep ramps and aggressive speed bumps gently rather than at pace.
