Renters comparing German SUVs in Dubai usually narrow it to three: the BMW X5 2023, the Mercedes GLE, and the Audi Q7. All three manage the school run and the airport pickup without complaint, so the real difference is how they drive, not what they can carry. The X5 is built around the driver's seat first, sharper through a corner and more alert on Sheikh Zayed Road than either rival feels from behind the wheel. We deliver it to your hotel, villa or terminal within one to two hours of booking. This page settles the real question: does that sharper character cost you space or comfort over a week here, and who should pick the X5 over its two closest rivals?
The X5 2023 in GCC spec is the xDrive40i, a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six making 340 hp and 450 Nm, sent through an eight-speed automatic to all four wheels via BMW's xDrive system. That is enough for 0-100 km/h in 5.5 seconds, brisk rather than violent, and this is not the X5 M or the M60 some listings borrow language from. If you came wanting a launch that pins you back, this base six-cylinder will not deliver it.
What it does deliver is the reason to pick BMW over the other two. The steering weights up naturally and tells you what the front wheels are doing, body roll stays in check through a fast on-ramp, and the chassis feels tied down at 120 km/h on E11 in a way the GLE's softer tune and the Q7's more cushioned setup do not match. A Mercedes GLE rides quieter and a Q7 feels calmer over broken tarmac, but neither turns in with the same immediacy. If driving engagement is part of why you are renting a German SUV instead of a Japanese one, this is the one to book.

| Transmission | Eight-speed automatic |
| Drive | xDrive all-wheel drive |

| Ground clearance | Around 214 mm |

Space is where the X5 quietly does its job without asking for credit. Five seats, a rear bench that gives two adults real legroom behind tall front seats, and a boot that holds 650 litres with the seats up, opening to about 1,870 litres folded. Two large cases and a couple of soft bags load flat without stacking, and a week of grocery runs and mall trips barely dents the space. Fold the rear bench for anything bigger and it swallows it.
At 4,922 mm long and just over two metres wide across the body, the X5 wants a little care in a tight multi-storey car park or a narrow valet lane. Nothing about it feels unwieldy once you have the measure of it. Ground clearance of around 214 mm shrugs off speed bumps and steep mall ramps that catch lower cars out, and it copes fine with a graded track if a trip out of the city calls for one, though a rented X5 is a road car first and should not be pointed at real dunes. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental pass to the renter, as with any car here.
The 83-litre tank gives a decent range between fills. BMW's official combined figure sits close to 9 to 10 L/100km, but that is rarely what you see with the AC running hard and stop-start traffic on the school run or Sheikh Zayed Road at rush hour. Budget closer to 11 L/100km for a realistic week of Dubai driving, still reasonable for a car this size and this quick.
Cooling a cabin this large from a parked 48-degree afternoon takes longer than it would in a small hatchback, simply because there is more air to move. The system is strong enough that it does not feel like a wait once you are moving, and rear passengers get their own vents rather than relying on cold air drifting back from the front. Park in shade or a covered bay where you can, and the first few minutes climbing back in after a long lunch are noticeably easier.
Rent the BMW X5 2023 if the way a car drives matters to you as much as what it can carry, if you want the sharpest-handling SUV of the three big German names, and if five seats and a properly sized boot cover your week here. It is the pick for someone doing real driving, Sheikh Zayed Road at pace, a run out to Hatta or Al Ain, not just point-to-point errands.
Look elsewhere if you want more back-seat cushioning and a quieter ride over broken road, where a GLE has the edge, or if three rows matter and you occasionally need to carry six or seven people, where a Q7 or a bigger SUV makes more sense. As a luxury SUV, this rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking, so do not expect the no-deposit terms some economy cars offer. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, and you will need to be at least 25 to take the keys.
