Bmw X5 2020 - start from 517 AED / day

We hand over the BMW X5 2020 with the no-deposit option, so you can drive off without a four-figure hold sitting on your card for the week. This is the xDrive40i, the 3.0-litre straight-six version, and it's the one most people actually want: a midsize luxury SUV that drives far better than its size suggests, with a plush, tech-heavy cabin and an engine that's smooth at a crawl and strong on the open road. If you're a couple or a small family who wants one premium car for highway miles and airport runs, this is the sweet spot. The catch is the parking and the seat count, and I'll be honest about both.

What this X5 is, and who it suits

The xDrive40i runs a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six making 335 hp through an eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel-drive system. It moves. Zero to 100 km/h comes up in about 5.5 seconds, which means merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road or overtaking a slow lorry on the E11 is effortless. But the gearbox is so smooth and the power so linear that it never feels like a sports car when you don't want it to. In stop-and-go traffic out of the Marina or along the airport road, it just glides.

It's a five-seater. The standard 2020 X5 has two rows, and that's the version we rent. For two adults and two kids with a week of mall runs and a weekend in the mountains, it's roomy and comfortable. If you regularly need a sixth or seventh seat, this isn't your car, and I'll say so again at the end.

Does my luggage fit

Yes, comfortably. The boot holds 650 litres with the rear seats up, which swallows two or three large hard cases plus soft bags without anyone wrestling the lid shut. A DXB pickup with a family's worth of luggage is no drama here, and that's the practical edge the X5 has over a sedan or a compact crossover. Fold the rear seats and you're at 1,860 litres, enough for a flat-pack run or bikes. For most renters the standard boot is more than they'll use.

Fuel, range and how often you'll refuel

The official combined figure is around 9 L/100km, but be realistic. In Dubai heat with the AC fighting a 45-degree cabin, plus city stop-start and the odd hard pull onto the highway, you'll see closer to 11 or 12. With an 83-litre tank, that still gives you a genuine 650 to 700 km of mixed driving between fills. A week of normal city use and airport runs is usually one fill-up, maybe a top-up before you hand it back. It takes 95 octane, so factor that over standard 91.

Heat, cabin and the everyday drive

The AC is one of the X5's strong points. The cabin is large, so a car baking in a mall car park takes a moment to recover, but the system pulls it down fast and there are rear vents, which matters if kids are in the back on a July afternoon. The seats are supportive on a long E11 cruise, the cabin is quiet, and the digital displays and head-up unit are clear and quick. It's a genuinely nice place to spend a commute.

A few Dubai rules worth flagging briefly. Salik tolls are billed to you, the renter, and any RTA speeding or parking fines pass through to you as well, so keep an eye on the limits. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a child seat, which we can add.

Parking, ramps and where it's tight

This is where you size up your honesty. The X5 is nearly two metres wide and just under five metres long. On Sheikh Zayed Road that width feels planted and safe. In a tight Marina tower bay or a narrow mall ramp, it's a big car and you'll use the cameras and sensors, which are excellent. If you've only ever driven a hatchback, give yourself a day to judge the corners. The 214 mm of ground clearance means speed bumps, mall ramps and the occasional graded track are no concern, and it'll handle a light desert verge, though this is a road-biased SUV, not a Hatta rock-crawler.

The recommendation

Rent the X5 2020 if you're a couple or a family of four who wants one car that does everything well: a fast, refined highway cruiser for SZR and airport runs, a comfortable daily, and a boot that takes real luggage. It's the sporty-yet-plush pick in its class, and the no-deposit option makes it an easy week.

Don't rent it if you genuinely need seven seats, because this is a five-seater and no amount of space fixes a missing third row; book a larger seven-seat SUV instead. And if your week is mostly short city errands and tight parking, a smaller crossover will cost less to run and slot into Marina bays without a second thought. For everyone in between who wants premium without the bulk of a full-size SUV, the X5 is hard to beat.
