Bmw X4 2022 - start from 466 AED / day

Slide a BMW X4 2022 into a packed Mall of the Emirates level and you learn its character fast: it's nearly two metres wide, low-slung and styled to be looked at, and it wants a careful line where a boxy SUV would just park. We rent the X4 across Dubai with doorstep delivery in one to two hours, and the version we run is the xDrive30i, a 252 hp turbo four with all-wheel drive and a quick eight-speed automatic. The case for it is simple and a little vain: this is the SUV you rent because you like how it looks and how it drives, not because you need maximum space. If space is the priority, there's a smarter pick in the same showroom, and we'll get to it.

The drive, and the engine behind it

The xDrive30i makes 252 hp from its 2.0-litre turbo four, sent through the eight-speed auto and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. It's properly quick for the class, hitting 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, with a top speed you'll never legally approach here. On Sheikh Zayed Road the mid-range torque matters more than the headline figure. Merging into fast traffic and overtaking at 120 happen without a downshift you have to wait for, and the AWD keeps it planted when a summer cloudburst turns the E11 greasy. It corners flatter than its height suggests, which is the part the coupe styling promises and, unusually, delivers.

Parking and placing it around the city

This is the honest catch with the X4, so it's worth dwelling on. At 1,918 mm wide it's a broad car, and you feel that width in older Marina towers, tight underground bays and on the steep ramps that thread between buildings. The standard parking sensors and reversing camera do most of the heavy lifting, but a full mall level on a Friday still wants patience and a deliberate line. The flip side is the 204 mm of ground clearance, which clears community speed humps, raised mall entrances and the odd sandy shoulder without you wincing. It sits high enough to feel unbothered on rough tarmac, even if the soft sand is off limits.

Boot and back seats, before you book

The coupe roofline costs you here, and you should know that going in. The boot holds 525 litres, which is genuinely useful: two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags fit fine for a DXB or DWC airport run. The catch is the sloping rear glass, so tall, boxy items have to go in at an angle and the opening is shallower up top than a square-backed SUV. Fold the rear seats and you free up to 1,430 litres for a flat-pack run or a week of luggage for two. The rear seat is the bigger compromise: headroom drops away under that falling roofline, so anyone over about 1.85 metres will brush the lining, and three across for a long highway leg is a squeeze. Two adults back there are comfortable across town. There are rear air vents, which matter more here than the spec sheet suggests.

Living with the heat

Park an X4 in open July sun and the cabin turns into an oven within minutes, leather seats included. The good news is the climate system pulls a 45-degree cabin down to bearable in three to four minutes, and the rear vents mean back-seat passengers aren't left waiting on the front to blow cool air their way. That first minute on hot leather is unpleasant no matter how strong the AC is, which is physics rather than a fault. Crack the windows for ten seconds as you set off and it clears faster. With kids in the back on a school run, those rear outlets are the feature that earns its keep.

Fuel and the running cost reality

The marketing economy figure is optimistic, as always. In real Dubai driving, mostly stop-start city with bursts of highway, expect somewhere around 9 to 10 litres per 100 km from the 65-litre tank. That's a comfortable 600-plus km between fills on a mixed week, so most renters refuel once, twice if they're covering ground. It takes 95 octane happily. Two costs fall to you: Salik deducts a few dirhams each time you pass a toll gate, and any RTA fine during your rental comes back to you, so the speed the X4 makes so easy is worth watching.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the X4 if you want a premium midsize SUV that drives and looks sharper than the crowd, you usually carry one or two passengers, and a fast, composed motorway car matters more to you than a square boot. For a couple touring Dubai who want presence without Range Rover money, it's a genuinely good companion.

Take the X3 instead if you regularly seat tall adults in the back or pack the boot to the roof. You get the same engine and feel with proper headroom and a more usable cargo hold. And if the badge isn't the point and you just need space and strong AC for a week, a mainstream midsize SUV costs less and does the family job without complaint. The X4 is a want, not a need, and that's precisely why the people who book it love it.
