Bmw X4 2020 - start from 423 AED / day

The BMW X4 2020 is what you rent when you want a midsize SUV that photographs like a coupe and still hauls two people and their cases across Dubai in comfort, and we hand it over anywhere in the city within 1 to 2 hours. This black xDrive30i takes the mechanicals of the boxier X3 and wraps them in a lower, sloping roofline that trades a little practicality for a lot of presence. The decision this page helps you make is whether that trade suits your week. For a couple or a solo driver chasing the look and a genuinely quick drive, it usually does. For anyone regularly filling the back seat, it usually doesn't, and we'll show you exactly where the line falls.

The pace that justifies it

The xDrive30i runs a 2.0-litre turbo four making 252 hp through an eight-speed automatic and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive. It reaches 100 km/h in 6.3 seconds, properly quick for a midsize SUV. The raw figure matters less than where the torque arrives, right in the middle of the rev range, exactly where you want it to slot onto Sheikh Zayed Road or pull past a slow truck at 120. On the rare wet morning when a downpour leaves the E11 slick, the all-wheel drive hooks up and goes while lesser cars scrabble. It's the sort of pace that never feels like it's working hard, which is the whole appeal.

The back seat and the boot, told straight

This is where the coupe shape charges you, so know it before you book. The boot holds 525 litres, which is genuinely useful: two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags fit for a DXB or DWC airport run. The catch is the sloping rear glass, so tall boxy items go in at an angle and the opening is shallower up top than the X3's. Fold the rear seats and you free up to 1430 litres, plenty for a flat-pack run or a week of luggage for two.

The rear seat itself is the real compromise. Headroom drops away under that roofline, so anyone much over 1.85 metres brushes the lining and a six-footer behind a tall driver sits tight. Two adults are fine across town; three across for a long highway leg is a squeeze. The wide door openings do make fitting a child seat easier than the styling implies, and child seats are required for under-fours under RTA rules.

Parking, bumps and everyday Dubai

At 1918 mm wide the X4 is a proper midsize SUV, and you feel that width in older Marina towers and tight mall bays. The standard sensors and camera do most of the work, but a packed Mall of the Emirates level still wants a careful line. The good news is the clearance: 204 mm clears speed bumps, sandy shoulders and the steepest mall ramps without a wince, so you're not crawling over every community hump. The xDrive badge tempts people toward soft sand, but leave that to a dedicated 4x4. For tarmac, the odd graded track and daily city driving, the X4 sits high enough to feel unbothered.

Fuel and what the week costs

The 65-litre tank and a real-world figure around 9 to 10 L/100km in mixed Dubai driving give a comfortable 600-plus km between fills. Most renters top up once on a normal week, maybe twice with a lot of highway. It takes 95 octane without complaint. The X4 is quick, so a heavy right foot pushes consumption up, but driven normally it's no thirstier than the class average. On costs, Salik deducts a few dirhams each time you pass a gantry, and any RTA fine during the rental comes back to you.

Staying cool in the heat

Park an X4 in open July sun and the cabin turns to an oven within minutes, which is true of any car here. What matters is recovery, and the climate system pulls a 45-degree cabin down to something bearable in three to four minutes, with rear vents so back-seat passengers aren't left waiting. The leather seats get genuinely hot, so the first minute is unpleasant no matter how strong the AC, and that's physics rather than the car. Drop the windows for ten seconds as you set off and it clears faster.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the X4 2020 if you want a premium midsize SUV that looks and drives sharper than the crowd, you usually carry one or two passengers, and a fast, composed motorway car matters more to you than a square boot. For a couple touring Dubai who want presence without Range Rover money, it's a genuinely satisfying pick.

Take the boxier X3 instead if you regularly seat tall adults in the back or pack the boot to the roof. Same engine, same feel, proper headroom and a more usable load space. And if the badge isn't the point and you just need space and strong AC for the week, a mainstream midsize SUV costs less and does the family job without fuss. The X4 is a want rather than a need, which is precisely why the people who want it like it as much as they do.
