Need a premium SUV that still drives like a proper car, with 250 km a day built into the rate? We rent the BMW X3 2023 across Dubai, and it's the compact SUV we hand over most often to couples and small families who want a recognisable badge without stepping up to something the size of an X5. The version we run is the xDrive30i: a turbocharged 2.0-litre four, all-wheel drive, and an eight-speed automatic that's quick to kick down on Sheikh Zayed Road. This page is about one decision. The X3 is the keen-driving, well-built choice in its class, but the cabin and boot are compact-class, so it suits some renters far better than others.
The X3 xDrive30i puts out 248 hp from its turbo four, backed by a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that smooths the stop-start and adds a small shove off the line. It'll do 0 to 100 km/h in about 6.3 seconds and run on to a limited 210 km/h, which is far more pace than a Dubai commute needs but very welcome the moment you have to clear a slow truck on the E11. The eight-speed auto holds gears sensibly and doesn't hunt. What sets the X3 apart from softer rivals is how it turns in and settles. It feels like a tall saloon, not a wallowing crossover, and on a Marina ramp or a fast slip road that composure is the whole point.

The boot holds 550 litres, which is useful for the class but not vast. For two people on a week's stay you've got room to spare. For a couple plus two kids heading to DXB or DWC with full-size cases, two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags is the honest ceiling with the rear seats up. Drop the 40/20/40 rear bench and you free up real space for a stroller or a big grocery run, but you can't have both the extra passenger and the cargo at once. If your group regularly travels four adults deep with airport luggage, this is where the X3 feels snug and you should size up.
Dubai summers sit in the high 40s, and a German SUV parked in the sun bakes like anything else. The X3's saving grace is a strong climate system and rear air vents, so the second row gets cool air rather than relying on the front blowing back. From a 45-degree start, give it a few minutes with the fans up before it's comfortable. Kids in the back stay properly cooled here, which isn't true of every car we rent, and that matters on a school run in July.
The 65-litre tank and a combined figure near 9.9 L/100km look efficient on paper. In real Dubai use, with the AC fighting the heat and stop-start traffic on the way into town, expect closer to 11 to 12 litres per 100 km. That still gives you the better part of 550 to 600 km between fills in normal driving, so a typical week of errands, a couple of airport runs and some highway cruising means filling up maybe once, twice if you're covering ground. It takes premium fuel, as you'd expect from the badge. The mild-hybrid system claws a little back in traffic, but don't rent the X3 expecting hatchback economy. You're paying in fuel for the performance and the four-wheel grip.
At 4.72 metres long and 1.89 wide, the X3 is a midsize SUV, not a tank. It slots into mall and tower bays without drama, and the parking sensors and camera take the guesswork out of tight multi-storey ramps in Marina or Downtown. The 204 mm of ground clearance clears speed bumps and raised mall entrances comfortably, so you're not wincing at every hump. On Sheikh Zayed Road it's in its element: stable at a cruise, with enough in reserve to overtake cleanly without dropping two lanes' worth of momentum. The xDrive grip is reassuring in summer rain and on the odd sandy slip road, though this is a road SUV, not a dune machine.
A few Dubai practicalities. Salik tolls run on the renter's account, and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you, so keep an eye on the speed limits the X3 makes very easy to exceed. Child seats are required for under-fours, and we can fit one on request.
Rent the X3 2023 if you're a couple or a small family who wants a premium drive in a size that's easy to live with in the city. It's the SUV here that rewards a keen driver while still doing the school run, the mall and the airport without fuss. Be clear-eyed about two things: the rear seat and boot are compact-class, so four adults with luggage will feel the limits, and the higher trims that look good in photos can run pricier and stiffer than the core car. If you need genuine three-row or big-boot space, step up to an X5. If you mostly want a soft, quiet ride and don't care how it corners, a comfort-led rival will suit you better. For everyone in between who wants the badge and an SUV that actually drives, the X3 is the one we'd point you to.
