If you want a premium SUV but don't need the fast version of one, the BMW X3 2023 is the sensible pick, and we rent it from age 18 when most desks make you wait until 21. The car we run is the xDrive20i: a 2.0-litre turbo four with 184 hp, all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic. It's the calmer, more economical X3, and that's the whole point of this page. For a couple or a small family who want the badge, the build quality and an easy week of driving rather than outright pace, this is the X3 to book. Where it asks you to compromise, mainly on rear space and boot size, we'll be straight about it.
The xDrive20i won't pin you to the seat. It does 0 to 100 km/h in 8.9 seconds and tops out at a limited 210 km/h, which sounds modest next to the hotter 30i but covers everything a Dubai week throws at you. Around town the turbo pulls cleanly from low revs, so pulling away from lights and slotting into traffic never feels like work. On Sheikh Zayed Road you've got enough in reserve to overtake a slow truck, you just plan it half a second earlier than you would in the quicker car. The eight-speed auto is smooth and doesn't hunt for gears, and the all-wheel drive keeps it composed in a summer downpour. This is an engine tuned for relaxed competence, not drama, and for most renters that's exactly right.

This is where the smaller engine earns its keep. The 60-litre tank and the lighter four-cylinder mean the xDrive20i sips less than its quicker siblings. Drive a normal Dubai mix of city errands and some highway and you'll see real-world consumption in the region of 9 to 10 litres per 100 km, more if you're sitting in Marina traffic with the AC fighting the heat. That still gives you the better part of 550 km between fills, so a typical week of school runs, mall trips and a couple of airport runs means stopping for fuel maybe once. It drinks premium, as the badge demands, but you're not feeding a thirsty performance engine here, and that shows up in how often you visit the pump.
The boot holds 550 litres, useful for the class without being cavernous. Two people on a week's stay have room to spare. A couple with two kids heading to DXB or DWC can manage two large cases plus a few soft bags with the rear seats up, which is the honest ceiling. Drop the 40/20/40 rear bench and you open up to 1,700 litres, plenty for a stroller and a big grocery run, but you can't carry the extra passenger and that load at the same time. The rear seat itself is fine for two adults across town and a squeeze for three on a long leg. If your group is regularly four adults deep with full airport luggage, this is where the X3 feels snug and an X5 makes more sense.
Dubai summers sit in the high 40s, and a German SUV parked in the sun bakes like any other car. The X3's advantage is a strong climate system with proper rear air vents, so the second row gets cool air rather than relying on the front blowing back. From a 45-degree start, give it a few minutes with the fans up and it's genuinely comfortable through the cabin. For a family putting kids in the back on a July school run, those rear outlets matter more than any trim badge, and not every car on the lot has them.
At 4.71 metres long and 1.89 wide, the X3 is a true midsize SUV, easy enough to place once you've driven it for a day. It slots into mall and tower bays without fuss, and the standard sensors and camera take the stress out of the steep Marina ramps. The 204 mm of ground clearance clears speed bumps and raised mall entrances comfortably, so you're not crawling over every hump. On the open road it settles into a quiet, planted cruise on the E11, and the xDrive grip is reassuring on a sandy slip road, though this is a road SUV and not a dune machine.
A couple of Dubai practicalities. Salik tolls run on the renter's account, and any RTA fines during your hire pass to you, so keep an eye on the limits. Child seats are required for under-fours, and we can fit one on request.
Rent the X3 2023 xDrive20i if you want a premium midsize SUV with all-wheel-drive security and easy running costs, and pace isn't your priority. It's the comfortable, sensible choice for a couple or a small family who value the badge and the build over a stopwatch. The from-18 rule makes it reachable for younger drivers too.
Look elsewhere in two cases. If you crave the performance and the urgency, the quicker xDrive30i is worth the extra. And if you regularly carry four adults with luggage, or want a genuine three-row, step up to an X5, because the X3's back seat and boot are midsize, not vast. For the renter who wants a calm, well-built SUV that doesn't punish them at the pump, the 20i is the X3 we'd point you to.
