The question worth answering before you book is whether that sportier roofline costs you anything you'll actually notice inside, and who this shape suits over a more upright SUV.

The engine, and how it drives

The xDrive20i badge on this X2 means a 2.0-litre turbo four sending 201 hp and 300 Nm through all four wheels, with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox doing the shifting. It's brisk rather than fast. Pulling onto Sheikh Zayed Road from a slip lane, there's enough shove to get up to speed without planning the merge three cars in advance, and overtaking at 120 doesn't need a downshift and a run-up. The dual-clutch box is sharp once moving, though like most DCTs it can hesitate for a beat pulling away from a dead stop in stop-start traffic, which you get plenty of near Downtown or the Marina at rush hour.

The all-wheel drive is worth having in Dubai for reasons that have nothing to do with sand. It's there for the handful of days a year when rain turns the roads slick and for the extra composure it gives the car off the line.
