The BMW X2 2023 wears a sloped, fastback-style roofline that reads sportier than the boxier X1 it's related to under the skin, and that's the whole reason renters ask for it by name instead of taking whatever compact SUV happens to be on the lot. We should be upfront about the trade before you book: that dropped roofline eats into rear headroom, so the shape that sells the car in the yard is also its one real compromise inside. The outgoing X2, and what it's like at the wheel

This X2 is the sDrive20i, a 2.0-litre turbo four putting 192 hp and 280 Nm through the front wheels alone, no xDrive badge on this one. The 7-speed dual-clutch box shifts quickly once you're rolling, which suits Sheikh Zayed Road overtaking and the general pace of Dubai traffic, but like most dual-clutch setups it can pause for a moment pulling away from a dead stop at a Marina junction or a mall exit. Give it a beat before you plant the accelerator and it settles into a smoother rhythm.

Front-wheel drive is the honest answer for what this car is built for, which is quick, confident city driving rather than outright grip. It's fine on dry Dubai roads year round, and it's what most X2s sold here actually are, whatever the badge on a rival's spec sheet says. The one moment it's worth remembering is the handful of days a year when rain hits Sheikh Zayed Road and the surface goes slick. An xDrive car holds a line more calmly there. This one just asks for a bit more care and a longer gap to the car in front.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The coupe roofline is the part to plan around. Rear headroom is noticeably tighter than a boxier compact SUV because the glass starts sloping down earlier, right where a tall adult's head sits. Two kids in the back, or two shorter adults, won't feel it. Put a six-foot passenger behind an equally tall driver for a run out to Abu Dhabi and they'll notice the roof closer than they'd like within the first half hour.

The boot doesn't pay the same price. At 470 litres with the seats up, it takes one large case and a soft bag without a fight, which covers a DXB or DWC airport pickup for two people comfortably. Fold the rear bench and that opens out to roughly 1,355 litres, enough for a supermarket run plus flatpack furniture, or golf bags for two. For a couple, or a couple with one or two kids, the seats and the boot both do their job. Add a third or fourth adult with full luggage and the rear seat is where the car runs out of room first, not the boot.

A black cabin, fuel and running cost

Figure on somewhere around 8 litres per 100 km in real Dubai driving rather than the lower number a lab test would show, which puts the 51-litre tank at roughly 600 km before you're back at a station for a normal week of errands and school runs. Mileage on this car runs 250 km a day, with AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, so keep half an eye on the odometer if a day trip takes you well outside the city. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility, same as on every car we hand over, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys on this one.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Book the X2 2023 if you want a compact SUV that looks more expensive than it is, you're two adults or a small family doing city driving, malls and the odd airport run, and the styling matters to you more than maximum rear space. It's an easy car to place in a tight multi-storey bay and comfortable enough for a week of normal Dubai use.

Look elsewhere if you need four adults with full luggage for more than the odd trip, or a tall passenger will regularly sit behind a tall driver on longer drives. The X1 gives up some of the coupe roofline but buys back real rear headroom in a similar footprint. If wet-weather grip or genuine all-wheel drive matters to you, an xDrive-badged car in the fleet is the better call, and this FWD car isn't the one to book if Hatta or any unpaved track is part of the plan.
