Most of the Dubai market won't put a premium BMW in your hands before you turn 21. We rent the BMW X2 2022 from age 18, deliver it across the city in one to two hours, and let you cover a lot of ground without the extra-kilometre charge stinging. This is the coupe-styled compact crossover with BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive, a higher seat than a hatch, and a roofline chopped for looks rather than headroom. The question this page answers is whether that mix of premium badge, all-weather grip and a sharp shape suits your week here, or whether a boxier crossover would serve you better.
The X2's case starts with the way it moves. A 2.0-litre turbo four sends 192 hp through all four wheels and an automatic gearbox, and it reaches 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds. That's brisk rather than savage, and it's the right read on the car. On Sheikh Zayed Road it has the punch to pull into a gap, settle into a fast lane, and sit composed at 120 without feeling stretched. Through a curving interchange ramp it stays flatter than its ride height suggests, which is where the xDrive grip and the lower roofline pay off.
The all-wheel drive isn't for dunes. What it buys you is composure, the planted feel that keeps the car steady when a rare summer downpour leaves the E11 slick and lesser cars start to scrabble. Around town the turbo pulls cleanly from low revs, so nipping through traffic never feels like hard work.

The 61-litre tank is generous for a car this size, and on paper the X2 sips at around 6.6 litres per 100 km combined. Real Dubai driving, with the AC working flat out and stop-start traffic on the commute, lands higher, closer to 8 or 9 litres in mixed use. Even so, the tank stretches across a week of city errands and a couple of longer runs on a single fill, maybe two if you're covering real distance. Pair that with the 1 dirham extra-kilometre rate and a day trip to Hatta or the east coast won't hurt the bill. Petrol here is cheap, so this is never the car that empties your wallet at the pump. Two costs stay with you whatever you drive: Salik tolls run to your account at each gantry, and any RTA fine during the rental is yours.
The chopped roofline is the X2's whole personality, and it does cost a little space. The boot holds 470 litres, enough for two large hard cases and a couple of soft bags on an airport run to DXB or DWC with two people travelling. Add a third passenger's luggage and you'll be folding part of the rear bench, which drops the load space up to 1355 litres but costs you a seat. The sloped tailgate also narrows the opening near the top, so very tall, boxy items go in at an angle.
The back seat is the real trade. Two average-height adults are fine for a trip across town, but the roofline closes in over taller heads and three across for a long leg is tight. For a couple, a solo driver, or two adults with a child, the rear works. For four full-size adults all week, the X1 with its taller roof is the smarter pick.
At 4.36 metres long the X2 is properly compact, shorter than a 3 Series, so tight Marina bays and packed mall levels aren't the fight they are in a bigger SUV. The 182 mm of clearance handles Dubai's speed bumps and most mall and basement ramps without you wincing, which can't be said for the lower BMW saloons. The catch is the shallow rear glass, so the reversing camera earns its keep in a busy car park.
Summer cooling is strong, and the compact cabin works in your favour after the car has baked at 45 degrees: less air to chill means the AC drags the temperature down fast once you're moving with the fans up. The front vents hit hard and there are rear outlets, so back-seat passengers aren't left waiting. Give it a minute with the doors shut and it's comfortable. Child seats are required for under-fours under RTA rules, and we can fit one on request.
Rent the X2 2022 if you want a premium small SUV with real pace and all-weather grip, you value an easy-to-park size over maximum boot space, and you'd rather not wait until 21 to drive something with a proper badge. For a couple or a solo driver clocking up the kilometres, the cheap extra-kilometre rate and the planted highway feel make it one of the better-value ways to spend a week in a BMW.
Step up to the X1 if you regularly carry four adults or need the boot packed to the roof, since the X2 trades a little practicality for its look. And if the badge isn't the point and you just want cheap space with strong AC, a mainstream compact SUV will save you money. For the driver who wants premium feel and a small footprint, though, the X2 hits a sweet spot the bigger BMWs can't.
