What you're not buying is more room, more ground clearance, or lower fuel bills. Be clear with yourself about which of those you actually wanted.

People and cases

The boot is the X1's strongest practical card. At 540 litres it takes two large hard cases standing upright with a soft bag wedged alongside, which covers a couple flying into DXB for a week without anyone sitting with luggage on their lap. The load floor is square and the opening is wide, so you're not doing geometry at the kerb at two in the morning. Drop the rear bench and it becomes a genuine van substitute for a flat-pack pickup.

Skip it if you need to carry four adults and their luggage at once, and size up to an X3 instead. Skip it if the badge isn't the point, because a mainstream crossover gives you the same interior room for a lower rate. And skip it outright if there's a desert trip in your plans, because that's a different car entirely.
