The BMW X1 2021 is the compact SUV that lets you rent the badge without renting the fuel bill that usually comes with it, and we deliver it anywhere in Dubai within 1 to 2 hours. This black xDrive20i is a five-seat premium crossover with all-wheel drive, and it's the sort of car that does a full week of city errands on a couple of tank fills rather than draining your budget at every gantry stop. Our argument here is about value: for a solo traveller or a couple who want a real BMW for daily Dubai driving, the X1 gives you most of what a bigger X3 does for noticeably less at the pump. Where that logic runs out is space, and we'll be straight about it lower down.
Start with the numbers renters care about, because this is where the X1 quietly wins. The 2.0-litre turbo four sips fuel for what it delivers, with a combined figure of around 7 L/100km. Real Dubai driving with the AC fighting the heat pushes that nearer 8 to 9 in stop-and-go traffic, but the roughly 61-litre tank still stretches past 600 km of mixed running. For most renters that's one fill mid-week, maybe a second if you're doing daily highway legs. Salik deducts a few dirhams each time you cross a gantry and any RTA fine during the rental comes back to you, so the toll and the odd fine are the only running costs that scale with how much you drive.
This is the xDrive20i: 192 hp through a smooth eight-speed automatic, driving all four wheels. It reaches 100 km/h in 7.4 seconds, brisk enough that merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road or the E11 is a non-event and there's enough in reserve to overtake cleanly at 120. Bury the throttle from a standstill and there's a brief pause while the turbo spools, and that's the only moment the modest engine shows itself. For school runs, mall trips and airport pickups it never feels short of pull, and the all-wheel drive gives it real composure on the rare wet morning when the E11 turns greasy.

The boot holds 505 litres with the seats up, opening to 1550 with the rear bench folded. In practice that's two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags, or a comfortable airport run to DXB or DWC for a couple with check-in cases. Fold the bench and a flat-pack run or a bike goes home without drama. It stays a compact SUV, though, so four adults with four big cases for a fortnight will end up stacking things on laps. That's the point where the X3 earns its extra money, and I'd send you there rather than let you fight the X1's limits all week.
At 4.45 metres long the X1 is easy to place, and the high seating position makes judging tight gaps far simpler than in a low sedan. Older Marina towers, steep mall ramps and packed multi-storey bays are all manageable, helped by the sensors and camera. The 183 mm of clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and the lips at mall entrances without a wince, so you're not crawling over every threshold. The xDrive badge tempts some renters toward soft sand, but this is a road car, not a dune machine. For tarmac and the odd graded track it sits high enough to feel unbothered.
Summer is the honest test of any rental here, and a black car parked in 45-degree sun bakes within minutes like anything else. What matters is recovery, and the X1's climate system pulls the cabin back to bearable quickly once you're moving, faster than most budget crossovers because there's less air to chill and it's a proper BMW setup. There are rear vents too, which count for far more in July than the brochure suggests when you've got passengers in the back. Drop the windows for ten seconds as you pull away and it clears faster still.
Rent the X1 2021 if you want a premium compact SUV that's cheap to run for a week of city life, and you're a solo visitor or a couple who value the badge, the high view and strong AC over outright space. The economy and the quick 1 to 2 hour delivery make it a low-effort, low-cost way into a real BMW.
Look elsewhere in two cases. If you're regularly four adults with a boot full of luggage, size up to the X3 for the room and the easier pull. And if the badge isn't the draw and you just want maximum space for the money, a mainstream crossover will stretch your dirhams further. But as an affordable, capable premium SUV for everyday Dubai driving, the X1 is hard to argue with.
