The decision to settle before you book the BMW 420i 2024 in Dubai is whether you genuinely want the roof down, because everything else about this car follows from that answer. It's the 4 Series Convertible: four seats, a 2.0-litre turbo driving the rear wheels, and a fabric top that folds away in about 18 seconds. We rent it from age 18, where most Dubai desks still ask for 21, and we bring it to your door instead of making you queue for it. Book it for open-roof evenings in the cooler months and it earns every dirham. Book it for luggage space or outright pace and the coupe does both better.
The 420i runs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four making 184 hp and 300 Nm, sent to the rear wheels through an eight-speed automatic. It gets to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and runs out at 236 km/h. That is noticeably slower than the coupe with the same engine, and the reason is weight. At 1765 kg the convertible carries the folding roof and the extra structure that has to go underneath it.
Drive it expecting a soft-top M car and you'll be bored by lunchtime. Drive it as a refined open-top cruiser and it's very good. Peak torque arrives from 1350 rpm, so it pulls away from lights without hesitation and gathers speed on the E11 without needing a long run-up or a downshift you can feel. Rear-wheel drive gives it a settled, balanced feel through faster sweepers, and the gearbox shifts so smoothly you stop noticing it. What the 420i doesn't do is make any real noise. If the soundtrack is part of why you want a convertible, that's worth knowing before you sign.

Boot space moves with the roof. Closed, you get 385 litres, which swallows a large case and a couple of soft bags without an argument. Fold the top away and the mechanism drops that to 300 litres, and the shape of what's left gets awkward as well as smaller. On an airport run this is the only spec that matters. Two people landing at DXB with a week of luggage each should keep the roof up until the cases are out of the car, then put it down on the way home.
The rear seats deserve the same honesty. Two adults will sit back there for a twenty-minute hop across town, but the backrests are upright and climbing in past a folded front seat is a small production every time. Think of the 420i as a comfortable two-seater with a useful shelf behind, and it stops disappointing you.
At 4768 mm it's a long car with long doors, which is a car park problem rather than a driving one. Pick an end bay in a busy Marina or mall structure so the door has room to swing. Sight lines with the roof down are excellent, so reversing into a tight space is easier than you'd expect from the shape. The car sits low, though, and steep ramps and the more aggressive speed bumps want a slow, straight approach.
On the E11 it does its best work, sitting flat and quiet at 120 with enough in reserve to change lanes and overtake without planning ahead. Salik tolls run to your account for the rental, and any RTA fine during your booking passes to you, so watch the camera stretches on Sheikh Zayed Road where a comfortable cruise creeps up on you.
The 59-litre tank and a claimed 6.7 to 7.4 L/100 km give you a fill that lasts a normal week of city driving, though real Dubai traffic with the AC working hard will push you above that figure. It takes premium fuel. Your booking includes 300 km a day and AED 0.5 per kilometre after that, worth a thought if you're planning a Hatta run and an Abu Dhabi day in the same week.
The top is a multi-layer insulated fabric, a long way from an old canvas soft top, but it's still cloth. Leave the car in an open bay through a July afternoon and it comes back hotter than a metal-roofed coupe parked next to it, with the seats and belt buckles getting there first. The AC is strong and clears a baked cabin within a few minutes once you're moving, so the problem is really those first two or three minutes. Drop all four windows as you pull out, let the trapped air leave, then close up and run the front vents hard. Rear passengers get less airflow than they would in a sedan, which is another reason the back is for short trips.
Roof-down driving here is seasonal, and anyone telling you otherwise hasn't done it. From roughly November through March it works at any hour and the car makes complete sense. Through the rest of the year you get early mornings and the hour after sunset. Between May and September, midday open-top driving is unpleasant no matter how hard the climate control works, because direct sun on your arms beats anything coming out of the vents. If your dates fall in high summer and the roof is the whole reason you're renting, book it anyway and plan the open drives for the evening.
Rent the BMW 420i 2024 Convertible if you're travelling as a couple or solo, you want a polished premium two-door for dinners and coast drives, and your dates fall anywhere between late autumn and early spring. It's quiet, it's beautifully finished, it's easy to drive every day, and roof down on a January evening it's one of the better ways to spend a week here.
Look elsewhere in three cases. If you need real luggage space, the 4 Series coupe has a bigger and much more usable boot for the same money and the same engine. If you're four adults with cases heading for the terminal, take a sedan or an SUV and don't fight the car. And if you want a convertible that sounds like an event, this isn't it, because the 420i's whole character is refinement. For the renter who wants an open roof and a calm, well-made car underneath it, this is the right choice.
