The BMW 420 2025 wears the same open-top body with a smaller engine underneath, and for anyone who isn't chasing outright speed, it's the shrewder way into a genuine 4 Series convertible. On Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11 it's a non-issue: the automatic finds gaps cleanly, the mid-range pulls hard enough for a confident overtake, and nothing about the car feels strained cruising past 120. What you don't get is the urgency of the 430 off a standing start or out of a slow corner. If that gap matters to you, it's worth paying for. If your week is mostly valet queues, coastal roads and evening drives, the 420 covers the same ground.

Living with a soft-top for a week

The mechanics are identical to every other G23 convertible in this fleet. It's a fabric roof, not a folding hardtop, and it drops in under 20 seconds, slowly enough to work at a red light if you left it up too long. Roof up, the boot holds 385 litres, enough for two people's cases on an airport run if you're not travelling with a full set of hard shells. The back seats are there for two, not four.
