Audi builds two very different Q8s, and the one that matters here runs without a drop of petrol. The Audi Q8 e-tron 2022 wears the same wide grille, low roofline and quattro badge as its combustion-engine sibling, but underneath sits a battery pack and two electric motors instead of a turbocharged V6. We drop this one at your Dubai hotel, villa or the airport, usually inside one to two hours of booking, in the black paint that suits a car built to be quietly fast rather than loud about it. The real question for anyone weighing an EV Q8 against a petrol one isn't which looks better. It's whether you're ready to plan a week around a battery instead of a fuel gauge.
Audi didn't call this car the Q8 e-tron in 2022. That name, along with a facelift and a larger battery, arrived with the model's relaunch in early 2023. A 2022 build like this one left the factory badged simply as the e-tron, so what you're renting is the original, well proven version of this SUV rather than a newer car wearing an older name. Under the black bodywork sit two electric motors, one on each axle, working together as Audi's electric quattro. There's no transfer case and no mechanical centre differential doing the work. The car reads wheel slip electronically and shifts torque front to back in a fraction of a second, which shows up as confident grip through a fast lane change or off a rain-slicked ramp.
Left in its normal drive setting, the SUV pulls away smoothly and almost silently, which takes some adjustment if you're used to a petrol Q8's engine note. Switch to the temporary boost mode and combined output climbs to 300 kW, about 402 hp, enough for 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. That's quicker off the line than the petrol Q8 it shares a badge with, and it arrives without turbo lag or a gearbox hunting for the right ratio, because there isn't one. Standard air suspension does much of the comfort work, settling the cabin over expansion joints and speed bumps, and it can lower itself slightly at highway speed to claw back some range. Ground clearance sits around 172 mm, enough for mall ramps and villa driveways without scraping, but this isn't a car built for graded desert tracks. On Sheikh Zayed Road the quattro system and a battery mounted low in the floor make the car feel planted through fast lane changes rather than nervous.
Five seats, and the rear bench genuinely fits two adults for an airport run or three kids for the school gate, with more knee room than you'd expect because the battery sits under the floor instead of eating into the cabin. Boot capacity is 660 litres with the seats up, enough for two large cases and a couple of soft bags without stacking them to the roof. Fold the rear bench down and that opens to 1,725 litres, which covers a furniture run or a full grocery haul. There's also a small compartment under the bonnet, about 50 litres, useful for the charging cable rather than a genuine second boot.

For a week of hotel-to-mall driving and airport pickups, that's a genuine family SUV, not a small electric car dressed up as one. At 1,935 mm wide it isn't a tight fit in most Dubai multi-storey bays, but reverse into a compact basement level and you'll want the sensors more than once.
Black cars soak up more heat off the roof and bonnet than a lighter colour, so on a parked afternoon this cabin starts hotter than a white or silver Q8 e-tron would. The recovery is quick regardless of paint, because the electric compressor starts cooling the moment you start the car instead of waiting on an engine to warm up. Climb back in after a few hours at the mall and expect the cabin to feel comfortable within a couple of minutes on the move, faster than most petrol SUVs manage. Running the air conditioning hard on a 45-degree day does pull down your remaining range faster than it would drain a fuel tank, so treat the WLTP figure as a best case rather than a daily guarantee.
On range itself, 411 km WLTP is the rated figure, and real Dubai driving with the AC working typically lands closer to 320 to 350 km. That's still several days of city errands and airport runs between charges for most renters. A hotel or villa charger on the 11 kW onboard system takes roughly eight to nine hours overnight, which suits a rental week fine if you plug in most nights. A rapid DC charger pulls up to 150 kW, enough for 10 to 80 percent in around half an hour. Electricity per kilometre here runs well below petrol, which is the real financial case for choosing this over the combustion Q8, though Dubai's public charging network is still thinner than its petrol stations, so plan the stop rather than assume one's nearby. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental pass through to the renter, the same as with any car on our fleet.
Rent the Audi Q8 e-tron 2022 if your week looks like a typical Dubai stay: a hotel or villa base, daily driving under roughly 300 km, evenings free to plug in, and a preference for a quiet, quick SUV over the combustion version. The running cost per kilometre beats the petrol Q8 comfortably, and the drive itself, quiet, quick and composed, is genuinely one of the more relaxing ways to cover ground here.
Look elsewhere if your plans involve back-to-back long drives with no downtime to charge, repeated same-day runs to Abu Dhabi, or a hotel or villa with no charger nearby and no confidence in finding a public one. The petrol Q8 removes that planning entirely. As with other luxury cars on our fleet, this one rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking, so it isn't a no-deposit rental. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for each extra kilometre, and you need to be at least 21 to take the keys, a lower bar than most luxury SUVs on our lot.
