Renting an electric SUV in Dubai raises one practical question before anything else: what happens when the battery runs low. The Audi Q8 e-tron 2021 handles that better than most, with a genuine 400-plus-kilometre range and quattro all-wheel drive delivered through two electric motors instead of one turbocharged engine. We hand this one over at your hotel, villa or the airport, usually within one to two hours of booking. Audi actually sold this generation simply as the "e-tron" until the Q8 e-tron name arrived with a 2023 facelift, so it's worth knowing you're renting the original, well proven version, not a different car under an older badge. The real decision is whether planning a charging stop fits your week, or whether it doesn't.
Two electric motors sit under the Q8 e-tron, one on each axle, and together they're what Audi calls quattro here. There's no mechanical centre differential and no transfer case. The car reads wheel slip electronically and shifts drive front to back in milliseconds, which in practice means confident grip off a rain-slicked ramp or through a fast lane change on Sheikh Zayed Road. In the default drive mode the SUV moves off cleanly and quietly. Select the temporary boost setting and combined output climbs to 300 kW, about 402 hp, enough for 0-100 km/h in 5.7 seconds. That's genuinely quick for a car this size, quicker than the petrol Q8 it shares a showroom with, and it arrives without turbo lag or gear hunting, because there's no gearbox to hunt through.
Ride comfort is the other half of the story. Standard air suspension keeps the cabin settled over expansion joints and speed bumps, and it can raise slightly for a rough access road or lower itself at highway speed to save range. Ground clearance sits around 172 mm at normal ride height, enough for mall ramps, villa driveways and the odd graded track, not enough to call this an off-roader. Treat it as quick, quiet and composed rather than adventurous, and it won't disappoint.
Five seats, and the back bench genuinely works for two adults on an airport run or three kids at the school gate, with decent knee room because the battery sits low in the floor rather than eating into cabin space. Boot capacity is 660 litres with the seats up, which takes two large cases and a couple of soft bags without stacking, and folding the rear bench opens that to 1,725 litres for a furniture run or a full grocery haul. There's also a small storage compartment under the bonnet, about 50 litres, useful for stashing the charging cable rather than acting as a genuine second boot. Don't expect frunk space that rivals the rear.

For a week of hotel-to-mall driving, airport pickups and the odd day trip, this is comfortably a family SUV, not a compromise dressed up as one.
This is the part that actually decides whether the Q8 e-tron suits your week. Rated range is around 411 km WLTP, and real-world Dubai driving with the air conditioning working hard trims that closer to 320 to 350 km, still enough for several days of city errands and airport runs between charges. A hotel or villa charger on the 11 kW onboard system takes roughly eight to nine hours for a full charge overnight, which suits most rental weeks fine if you plug in most nights rather than treating the battery like a fuel tank you only fill when it's empty. Find a rapid DC charger and the car will pull up to 150 kW, enough to go from 10 to about 80 percent in around half an hour, closer to a coffee stop than a full meal. The honest caveat is that Dubai's public charging network has grown but is still thinner on the ground than petrol stations, so plan the stop rather than assume you'll find one on the way.
The cabin itself cools quickly, because the electric compressor starts working the moment you start the car rather than waiting on an engine to warm up, with no belt-driven system to lag behind. Running the air conditioning hard on a 45-degree afternoon does eat into your range faster than it would eat into a fuel tank, so budget for that on longer drives rather than assuming the WLTP number holds all summer. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental come back to you, as with any car here.
Rent the Audi Q8 e-tron 2021 if your week looks like most Dubai rentals: a hotel or villa base, daily driving under roughly 300 km, evenings free to plug in, and a preference for a quiet, quick, well finished SUV over a diesel or petrol Q8. It's genuinely one of the more relaxing luxury SUVs to drive here, and the running cost per kilometre beats most petrol rivals in its class.
Look elsewhere if you need to cover long distances back to back without downtime to charge, repeated same-day drives to Abu Dhabi or further, or if your hotel or villa has no charger and you're not confident finding public ones nearby. A petrol Q7 or Q8 removes that planning entirely. As with other luxury cars on our fleet, the Q8 e-tron rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking, so this isn't a no-deposit rental. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for each extra kilometre, and you need to be 25 to take the keys.
