On the road, and how it handles Dubai traffic

The 2.0-litre turbo making 186 hp is more than enough for the way people actually drive here. It pulls away cleanly from the lights and has the mid-range to slot into a gap on Sheikh Zayed Road without you planning the move three cars ahead. The automatic is smooth in stop-start crawl, which is where you'll spend a lot of time. At 120 on the E11 it stays quiet and planted, far calmer than the cheaper crossovers a tier below. It's front-wheel drive, so treat it as a road car: great for the city and the highway, not for soft sand.

Keeping cool when it's 45 outside

Park anything in a Dubai July and the cabin turns into an oven within minutes, so what matters is how fast the AC claws it back. The Q3's climate system is strong, and the small cabin helps it cool quickly once you're moving. The front vents hit hard, and there are rear vents too, so back-seat passengers aren't left baking. Give it a minute with the doors shut and the fans up, and it's comfortable. For anyone carrying kids in the afternoon heat, those rear outlets earn their keep.

Parking, ramps and squeezing into a bay

At just under 4.5 metres the Q3 is easy to place. Tight multi-storey bays, the steep Marina ramps and mall car parks are all straightforward, helped by the high view out and the parking sensors. This is a car you can thread into a small bay at the end of a long day without thinking about it, which is more than you can say for a full-size SUV.

The boot, and whether your cases fit

The boot holds 530 litres, good for the class but still compact in absolute terms. Two people with a large case each plus a couple of soft bags will be fine for a DXB or DWC run. Drop the rear seats and you get a flat 1525 litres, enough for a big shopping haul or flat-pack furniture. The honest limit is four adults with full-size suitcases: that's the point where the boot loses and you should size up. For one or two travellers, it's plenty.

What you pay beyond the rental

A few running costs fall to you, and they're worth knowing up front. The 250 km a day included covers normal city use easily, with extra kilometres at 1 AED each if you're doing big highway days to Abu Dhabi. Salik tolls are charged to you as you pass the gantries, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you as well. Belts are mandatory in every seat, and a child seat is required for under-fours, which we can fit on request.
