If your shortlist for a premium compact SUV is the usual German trio and nothing else, the Alfa Romeo Tonale 2024 is the car that interrupts that habit. We rent it across Dubai and hand it over with payment sorted however suits you on the day, card, cash, bank transfer, or a tap of Apple Pay or Google Pay at the door. The Tonale is the choice for a renter who wants some character and a badge that turns heads at valet, rather than the quiet competence of an X1 or a GLA. That trade is the whole story here: you get styling and a chassis with feel, and you give up a little of the no-fuss practicality the sensible rivals are built around.
The version we run is the 1.5-litre turbo four with Alfa's 48-volt mild-hybrid setup, 130 horsepower, front-wheel drive, and a 7-speed twin-clutch automatic. The hybrid bit is light assistance, not a plug-in: a small electric motor smooths the gearbox and helps off the line, so it nudges the Tonale forward at low speed and tidies up stop-start crawl. It is not going to run on battery alone for any meaningful distance.
On the road the Tonale feels keener than its numbers suggest. The steering is quick and the body stays flat through a fast off-ramp, which is where this car earns its keep over the more aloof Germans. The flip side: 130 horsepower in a 1,525 kg SUV is adequate, not quick. It reaches 100 km/h in 9.6 seconds and tops out at 200, so merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road takes a firm right foot and a bit of planning. Treat it as a stylish cruiser with a sporty edge rather than a genuinely fast SUV and you will like it.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5L turbo petrol, 48V mild hybrid |
| Power | 130 hp |
| Transmission | 7-speed twin-clutch automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 500 L, 1,550 L with rear seats folded |
| Fuel economy | 5.7 to 6.1 L/100 km |
| Fuel tank | 55 L |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,528 x 1,841 x 1,601 mm |
| Ground clearance | 156 mm |
| 0 to 100 km/h | 9.6 seconds |
| Top speed | 200 km/h |
The boot holds 500 litres, which is a genuine strength for the class and one of the few areas the Tonale beats the obvious rivals on paper. Two large hard cases plus a couple of soft bags go in without a fight, enough for a family doing a week with airport runs at both ends. Drop the rear seats and you get 1,550 litres, so a single person moving a few boxes or loading sports kit has plenty to work with. The mild-hybrid battery sits under the cabin floor, not in the boot, so you keep the full space.
Inside is where the honesty comes in. Rear legroom is fine for two adults and tight for three across, and the sloping roofline trims headroom for taller passengers in the back. Four adults for a city evening is comfortable; four adults plus a week of cases is where you would feel the squeeze, even with that good boot.
Cabin cooling is the question every renter asks in summer, and the Tonale handles it well. Park it in open sun at 45 and the cabin bakes, same as anything, but the air conditioning pulls the front down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving, and there are rear vents so back-seat passengers are not left to suffer. Crack the windows for thirty seconds before you set off and it cools faster still.
Size-wise it is easy to live with. At 4.53 metres it slots into Marina and mall multi-storey bays without drama, and the 156 mm ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping. Forward visibility is good; the thick rear pillars mean you will lean on the camera when reversing into a tight bay, which is standard for the segment. This is a road SUV, so leave the soft sand and Hatta trails to a proper 4x4.
On running cost, the official economy is 5.7 to 6.1 litres per 100 km. Real Dubai driving, heavy AC and stop-start traffic, lands you nearer the top of that, call it around 7 in mixed use. With the 55-litre tank you are looking at roughly 700 to 800 km of real-world range, so a single fill covers most of a week of normal city driving with the odd airport trip to DXB or DWC. You are unlikely to refuel more than once on a typical rental.
A couple of practical notes for Dubai. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's to pay, so keep an eye on the gates and the speed limits. Seat belts are mandatory in every seat and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit on request.
Rent the Tonale if you want a premium compact SUV with personality, you value how it looks and drives over outright pace, and your group is two adults or a small family who will use that strong boot. For a week of city errands, dinner runs, and a couple of airport trips, it is a satisfying car to be seen in and a comfortable one to live with.
Look elsewhere if you regularly carry four adults with luggage, want the quickest or most fuss-free option, or expect serious overtaking punch on the highway. In those cases a more sensible compact SUV or a mid-size sedan will serve you better. The Tonale is the heart pick in this class, and for the right renter that is exactly the point.
