Run the numbers on a week of Dubai driving and the Volkswagen T-Roc 2023 makes a strong case for itself. We rent this compact SUV from 18, where most of the market won't deal with you until 21, and we deliver it to your door in an hour or two. It's an economy-class crossover with a turbo petrol engine that sips fuel for its size, so a normal week of city errands and a couple of airport runs rarely costs more than a single fill-up. This page is about whether the T-Roc is the sensible week-long daily for you, or whether you should go smaller for the rate or bigger for the boot.
The 1.5-litre turbo petrol is the reason this car is cheap to run. The official combined figure is 6.3 litres per 100 km, and even with the AC fighting 45-degree heat and you crawling through Marina traffic, you'll realistically see something in the sevens. On the 50-litre tank that works out to a real-world range comfortably past 600 km in mixed driving.
For most renters that means one stop for fuel across a normal week, sometimes none. Premium 95 is all it asks for; you don't need to pay for 98. If keeping the running cost predictable matters to you, this engine is the quiet selling point that the spec sheet undersells.
The T-Roc doesn't feel like a budget car, and that's the point. The 1.5 TSI makes 150 hp through an automatic gearbox and reaches 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds, so it pulls cleanly away from lights and overtakes on the E11 without you planning ahead. The cabin is proper VW: tight switchgear, a high and clear driving position, and a calm, quiet feel on a long motorway stretch that the cheaper crossovers can't match.
One thing to be straight about. The listing mentions all-wheel drive, but the 1.5 version we rent drives the front wheels. For everything a Dubai week involves that's irrelevant, but it does mean this is a road car, not a dune machine. For soft sand you want a real 4x4.

This is a five-seater that's genuinely built for four. Two up front and two kids behind ride in comfort, and a fifth passenger works for a short trip rather than a day out. The boot holds 445 litres, enough for two large cases and a few soft bags, or a full weekly shop. Drop the rear seats and you get 1,290 litres for the bigger loads.
Where it tightens up is the four-adults-with-luggage airport run. Four full-size suitcases behind the upright seats means stacking, and that's the cue to look at a Tiguan or a sedan instead. Pack like a couple or a small family and the T-Roc takes a week's worth without complaint.
From May to September the question with any rental is how fast the cabin recovers after baking in the sun. The T-Roc's cabin is small enough that the AC cools it quickly, the front vents hit hard, and rear vents keep back-seat passengers comfortable on a longer drive. A few minutes with the fan up and it's pleasant again.
The size helps everywhere you park. Just over 4.2 metres long, it fits tight bays, handles the steep Marina and mall ramps, and the 161 mm of clearance copes with Dubai's speed bumps and entrance lips that catch a low car underneath. Keep in mind that Salik tolls run on your account during the rental and any RTA fines pass to you, so watch the gantries and cameras on the E11. A child seat is required for under-fours and we can fit one on request.
Rent the T-Roc 2023 if you want a crossover that's cheap to run and feels a clear step above an economy hatch, and you're a couple or a small family doing a normal Dubai week. The efficiency, the cabin quality, and the easy size around town are the reasons to choose it over a thirstier rival.
Move up to a Tiguan or a midsize sedan if you regularly carry four adults and full luggage or need a bigger boot every day. Go smaller to a Polo if the daily rate is the only thing you're optimising for. But for one car that costs little to feed and still feels good to drive, the T-Roc is the one we'd put you in.
