Volkswagen T-Roc 2023 - start from 138 AED / day

The booking form on a Volkswagen T-Roc 2023 rental in Dubai says two passengers far more often than it says four, and then four people walk out of the building. We see it most weeks, and it is worth sorting out before the car arrives rather than at the kerb, because the difference between a good week in this one and an awkward one is decided by what goes in the back of it. Delivery runs one to two hours across most of the city, so there is usually still time to change your mind. Getting that call right is most of the decision on this car.

What fits, and who fits

The boot holds 445 litres with the rear seats up, which is generous for a car this length, though the shape of it decides more than the number does. It is deep from the tailgate to the back of the rear seats and it narrows at the wheel arches, so long luggage loads easily and wide luggage argues. A large hard case and a medium one stand upright beside each other with a couple of soft bags dropped in around them. A third full-size case goes on top and takes your rear view with it, which is the point where we would rather move you into something with a longer load bay than watch you rebuild the pile in a car park.

Everyday loads are where it quietly wins. A folded buggy plus a full week of shopping goes in without anything touching the rear bench, and a golf bag lies flat across the floor with room left beside it. Fold the seats and you get somewhere around 1,290 litres by most published figures, but Volkswagen's own material for this market only quotes the 445, so treat the folded number as a guide rather than a promise.

The back seat is a two-adult space. The car measures 1,819 mm across the body and a fair share of that goes into the doors, so the middle position suits a child, a short hop, or someone you do not like very much. Two child seats sit side by side without a fight. Children under four need one by law here, and we fit it before the car leaves us.

The arithmetic of a seven day booking

Two numbers cover most of what a week costs you. Volkswagen quotes 6.3 litres per 100 km combined, and the tank holds 50 litres. On the official figure that is close to 790 km. In real use here, with the air conditioning working through the afternoon and a decent share of the driving done stationary, the low sevens is the honest expectation, which puts a genuine tank at 600 to 650 km.

Now set a week against that. A resident commuting in from the outer communities, plus a few evenings out and one airport run, lands somewhere around 700 to 900 km over seven days. So you fill once and add a splash before you hand the car back, on 95 rather than 98. For something with this much room inside, that is a small fuel bill.

Mileage is unlikely to trouble you either. Every booking includes 300 km a day, so a seven day rental carries 2,100 km before anything extra applies, and beyond that it is AED 0.5 per kilometre. You would need a return run to Abu Dhabi mid-week and a heavy city week on top before that line ever reaches your invoice. Salik tolls run on your account for the length of the booking, and any RTA fine issued while the car is with you comes back to you.

Lane changes, bays and a cabin that has been baking

The T-Roc drives smaller than it looks, and the thing to know before you set off is what you cannot see. The rear pillars are thick and the back side windows are shallow, so a shoulder check on Sheikh Zayed Road tells you less than the same glance would in a saloon. Set the door mirrors wider than feels natural on the first trip and the problem largely goes away.

Parking is easy work. At 4,251 mm long it drops into the older narrow bays and the tighter multi-storey levels without the shuffling a full-size SUV needs, and you sit high enough to place the front corners on the first attempt. The raised body clears the speed bumps and entrance lips that have a low sedan scraping, though the steepest ramps still deserve a slight angle.

On the motorway the 250 Nm does more for you than the 150 hp. It arrives early and stays flat through the speeds you actually drive, so overtaking at 100 needs a squeeze of the pedal rather than a plan, and it holds 120 quietly. Front-wheel drive is the limit worth stating plainly. Tarmac and graded gravel are its territory, soft sand is not, whatever the ride height suggests.

Heat is the part renters underestimate. Air in a small cabin comes down fast, three or four minutes with the fan up against the eight a big seven-seater needs, so the temperature itself is not really the problem. The surfaces are. After four hours in an open lot the wheel rim, the belt buckle and the gear selector are all painful to touch, and the seat backs stay warm long after the vents have gone cold. Drop the windows for the first thirty seconds to dump the hot air, then close up and switch to recirculation. If a child is riding in the back through July, the shaded level of the car park is worth the extra two minutes of ramp.

The renter we would hand this one to

Book the T-Roc if you are two people, or two adults with small children, doing a mix of city driving and real motorway kilometres. That is the week it was built around, and on a long booking the quiet cruise and the modest fuel bill are what you are paying for.

Size up when the four passengers on your booking are four adults with luggage. The width and the boot will start annoying you by the second day, and a midsize SUV or a large saloon solves both at once. Go smaller when the driving never leaves your own neighbourhood, since a plain hatch handles school runs and grocery trips for less and you would be buying highway manners you never call on. For everything between those two, which is most of what we hand over, this is the easy call.
