Volkswagen T-Roc 2022 - start from 123 AED / day

Almost every enquiry we get about a Volkswagen T-Roc 2022 rental in Dubai arrives with a second car attached to it. People are either half sold on a Tiguan they suspect they need, or looking at a cheaper crossover that costs a few dirhams less per day and wondering if it would do. That comparison is the decision, not the T-Roc's own spec sheet. We can put one on your driveway without a deposit, and we take debit cards and cash as well as credit, so the money side rarely decides it either. What follows is the case for the middle option, and the weeks when it is the wrong one.

The car it is, and the two it is not

Take the body shape away and the T-Roc is a tall five-door hatchback. A 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol four making 150 hp and 250 Nm, an eight-speed automatic, and drive going to the front wheels only. At 4,251 mm long it occupies about as much road as an ordinary family hatch, so the SUV description is mostly about how high you sit rather than how much car you are placing into a bay.

A Tiguan is a real size up. More room across the back seat, a deeper load bay, and the ability to take things the T-Roc has to negotiate with. It also asks for more per day and more at the pump. The budget crossovers you will see on rental lots here go the other way. On paper they are within a few centimetres of the T-Roc, and they undercut it on the daily rate, but they get busy and loud at 120 in a way this one does not, and the gearbox in most of them hunts between ratios on a long incline.

One thing to be blunt about before anyone plans a weekend on the sand. Some listings for this car, ours included at times, show all-wheel drive. That is wrong. The 1.4 T-Roc sold in this region has never had 4MOTION, and with road tyres and front-wheel drive it belongs on tarmac and graded gravel. A soft dune will bury it, and recovery on a Friday afternoon is expensive.

Luggage, the back seat, and where it gives up

445 litres behind the rear seats is a good figure for something this length. In practical terms it takes two large hard cases standing upright with a cabin bag wedged alongside, which covers the arrival week most of our long bookings start with. A folded buggy plus a full trolley of shopping also fits without touching the rear bench. Fold the seats and you get roughly 1,290 litres, enough for a flat pack or a mattress topper, though VW's own material for this market only publishes the 445 figure so treat the folded number as approximate.

The back seat is where the width shows. At 1,819 mm across, a rear-facing child seat plus two adults beside it is tight, and three grown adults across the bench is a twenty minute proposition rather than an hour. Two up front and two children behind is the configuration this car is genuinely comfortable in, and that describes most of the bookings it goes out on.

The scenario that beats it is four adults landing with four full-size cases. You end up loading the rear seat and driving home with the mirror half blocked. If that is your booking, take the size up and stop arguing with the geometry.

Traffic, heat and the run out of town

Between May and September the number that matters is how long the cabin takes to become bearable, and small cars win that contest by default. There is not much air in a T-Roc to shift, so the front vents get on top of it within a few minutes rather than the ten a large SUV needs. Two honest notes. Climate specification varies between cars in this class and we will not promise a particular system on a particular booking, and nothing the car does beats parking in a basement. Hit recirculation as you pull away rather than pulling in more 45 degree air from outside.

Around town the size does the work. It slots into the narrow bays in older multi-storey car parks, the steering is light enough at parking speed that a six-lane U-turn takes one go, and the raised body clears the steeper speed bumps and mall entry ramps that make a low sedan scrape. Take the sharpest ramps at a slight angle anyway.

On the E11 it holds a 120 cruise quietly and overtakes on a squeeze of the pedal, because the torque peak sits low. Push much beyond that and it runs out of interest, which is fine, since so does the speed limit. Volkswagen quotes 6.3 litres per 100 km combined, which is roughly 790 km from the 50-litre tank on the official test. Real Dubai driving with the air conditioning working puts you nearer the low sevens and 600 to 650 km, so one fill a week for most renters. Your booking includes 300 km a day and anything past that is AED 0.5 per kilometre, which only a return run to Abu Dhabi would trouble. Salik tolls and any RTA fine issued while the car is with you come back to you, and children under four need a child seat, which we fit before delivery.

So, T-Roc, Tiguan, or something cheaper

Book the T-Roc 2022 if you are one or two people, or a couple with young kids, doing a mix of city driving and motorway kilometres, and you want a car that feels properly built without paying for capacity you will use twice. On a long rental that quietness and the low fuel bill are what you are actually buying.

Size up to a Tiguan if you regularly carry four adults with luggage, if you need a third row, or if your boot gets loaded to the roof more than once a week. Drop to a budget crossover or a plain hatch if your driving is short errands, no highway to speak of, and the daily rate is the only figure you are comparing. For the week that sits between those two, this is the one we would hand over the keys to.
