If you want a sedan that feels a class above the basic budget options but don't want to pay for something Passat-sized, the Volkswagen Jetta 2024 is the sensible middle. We rent it across Dubai with 250 km a day included, delivered to your door, and it's the car we hand to people who've outgrown a small hatch and want a proper boot, a quiet cabin, and a turbo engine that doesn't feel strained on Sheikh Zayed Road. This page is about who that suits and who should look elsewhere. The Jetta does most things well, but it isn't the cheapest sedan on the lot, and it isn't a Passat.
The current Jetta is a compact sedan built on the same bones as the Golf, and you feel the family resemblance the moment you close the door. The cabin is calm, the switchgear has weight to it, and the seats hold you properly on a longer run out to Hatta or Abu Dhabi. The 1.5-litre turbo petrol makes 158 hp through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic, driving the front wheels. That's enough to make highway merging and overtaking easy without drama. The DSG gearbox is quick once you're moving, though it can hesitate for half a beat from a dead stop, which you notice most pulling out of a tight parking ramp.
This is a four-and-a-half-metre car that drives like something smaller. It tucks into mall bays and handles Marina ramps without the nose-scrape worry, and the steering is light enough for U-turns yet settles down nicely above 100.

Yes, comfortably. The Jetta's boot is one of its strongest cards, and it's the reason we push it for airport runs over smaller sedans. Two large hard cases and a couple of cabin bags go in flat with room to spare, so a family of four landing at DXB with a week's worth of luggage isn't playing Tetris on the kerb. The boot opening is wide and the floor is low, which matters more than the raw litres when you're loading heavy cases at the end of a long flight. For a DWC pickup or a four-up trip down to Abu Dhabi, the back seat takes three at a push and two in real comfort, with proper rear legroom for adults.
Dubai summers sit in the high 40s, and the question that actually matters is how fast the AC pulls a baking cabin back to liveable. The Jetta does well here. The compressor is strong, the front vents move plenty of air, and a cabin left in direct sun gets bearable within a couple of minutes and properly cold a few minutes after that. There are rear vents too, so passengers in the back aren't left to suffer on a school run or an airport transfer. Park in shade when you can and it's a non-issue. This is a cabin that copes with August, not one that struggles through it.
Real city economy lands around 8 to 11 km/L depending on how much you sit in traffic, which is honest turbo-petrol territory rather than hybrid figures. With the 50-litre tank, that's a comfortable few hundred kilometres of mixed Dubai driving between fills, and the quoted 892 km range is a highway best you'll see cruising steadily, not darting around the city. For most renters that means one fill covers the better part of a week, and you'll rarely think about a petrol station. The 250 km a day we include is generous enough that a daily DXB run plus errands won't tip you into extra-kilometre charges.
A few things sit on the renter. Salik tolls are billed to you, and you'll cross a gate or two on most Marina, Downtown or airport trips. Any RTA speed or parking fines pass through to the renter as well, easy to avoid on Sheikh Zayed Road by watching the limit. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat. None of this is Jetta-specific, but it's the part renters forget.
Rent the Jetta if you want a well-built, good-to-drive sedan with a big boot and a quiet cabin, and you're happy to pay a bit more than the cheapest economy car for that quality. It's the right call for couples and small families, business trips, and anyone doing regular airport runs who values how it feels at speed.
Skip it if budget is the only thing that matters, in which case a smaller economy sedan does the basic job for less. And if you're routinely carrying four adults plus a full load of luggage on long highway hauls, or you simply want more rear space and a softer ride, size up to a Passat-class car instead. The Jetta is the smart middle ground, not the biggest or the cheapest, and for most people that's exactly the point.
