Some cars you book to get from A to B, and some you book because they look great parked outside the café. The Beetle is firmly the second kind. We deliver and collect across the city, so you can rent a Volkswagen Beetle in Dubai without a counter queue or a deposit hold, and have a curvy little retro hatch (or a drop-top, when one's free) waiting wherever you are. This isn't the sensible family hire. It's a personality pick: front-drive, snug, easy to park, and built to look good in every photo you take with it. The job of this page is simple, telling you whether the Beetle is your car or whether a plain Volkswagen hatch would serve you better.

Who the Beetle is actually for

Two or three days of fun, a weekend visitor who wants something with character, a photo trip down to La Mer or out to the Hatta hills, a birthday treat. That's the Beetle's natural job. It's a small front-wheel-drive car with two real seats up front, a domed roof and a shape nobody mistakes for anything else. If you want to turn up somewhere and have people notice the car, this one earns its keep.

Where it doesn't earn its keep is the daily grind. If you're moving a family, hauling luggage every day, or doing long Abu Dhabi commutes with three adults aboard, you'll be happier and more comfortable in a normal compact. The Beetle trades practicality for looks, and it makes that trade openly. We'd rather you booked it knowing that than be surprised by the back seats on day one.

What the looks cost you inside

The front of the cabin is the good part. The driver and passenger get proper space, comfortable seats and a clear view out, and on the later cars the dash has a tidy retro touch without feeling like a gimmick. For two people on a trip around town, it's genuinely pleasant.

The back is where the curvy roof bites. That sloping rear glass eats headroom, so the two rear seats suit kids or a short hop, not two adults across the city. Treat the Beetle as a two-person car with occasional rear seats and you'll never be annoyed. Expect it to seat four in comfort and you will be.

The boot is small, as you'd guess from the shape. A couple of soft weekend bags or the airport run for two travels fine. A full week's hard luggage for a group does not. If your trip involves real suitcases, fold the rear seats down and pack soft, or pick something with a bigger tail. We'll tell you honestly at booking whether your bags are going to fit.

Hatch or convertible

We carry the standard hatchback most of the time, and the cabriolet when one's in the fleet. The convertible is the one people picture: roof down along the coast, sun out, the whole point of a retro car on show. It's brilliant for an evening cruise or a winter day.

The catch is the season. From roughly May to September, an open roof in Dubai means real heat and strong sun, so you'll spend most of the drive with the top up and the AC working anyway. Book the cabriolet for the cooler months, October through April, when the open-top idea actually pays off. In high summer, the hatch with its air-con sorted is the smarter call, and you still get the same head-turning shape.

A note on availability and age

The Beetle is out of production, so the cars in circulation are used examples rather than this year's model. That means availability moves around and the exact car, its colour, trim and age, varies with what's free on your dates. We don't guarantee a specific colour, and we won't pretend the Beetle is a brand-new car. What we do is check the one going out to you, so it drives and looks the part for the photos you're renting it for.

Because demand for a fun car like this spikes on weekends and over holidays, book early if your dates are fixed. If your heart's set on the convertible specifically, give us as much notice as you can, since we hold fewer of those than the hatch.

Living with it around the city

As a small front-driver, the Beetle is easy where it counts here. It slots into tight mall and Marina bays, it's light to steer in traffic, and it sips fuel compared with the big stuff. Salik gates are handled the same as any of our cars, with the tag fitted so you're not chasing toll admin on a short trip. For a few days of café-hopping, beach runs and city photos, it's an easy thing to live with. Just keep your expectations set to "characterful small car," not "do-everything daily."

FAQ — Common Questions Answered.

Is the Beetle a sensible everyday rental or just a style choice?

It's a style choice, and we'd say book it as one. The Beetle is great for a few days of fun, photos and city driving for one or two people, but it gives up rear space and boot room for that distinctive shape. If you need a practical daily for a family or a lot of luggage, a normal compact hatch will serve you far better. Rent the Beetle when the look and the feel of the car are part of the plan, not when you just need transport.

How much space is in the back and the boot?

Plan around two people, with the rear seats and boot as occasional extras. The sloping roof cuts rear headroom, so the back seats suit children or short hops rather than two adults across town. The boot takes a couple of soft weekend bags or an airport run for two, but not a group's worth of hard suitcases. Fold the rear seats down for more room, and tell us your luggage at booking so we can confirm it'll fit before you commit.

Should I rent the convertible Beetle in Dubai's heat?

Save the convertible for the cooler months, roughly October to April, when an open roof is actually enjoyable. From May to September the sun and heat are strong enough that you'll keep the roof up and the AC running for most of the drive, which defeats the purpose. In high summer we'd point you to the hatchback instead, since you get the same retro shape with the air-con doing its job. Either way, let us know your dates and we'll tell you what's free.

Can I always get a specific colour or the exact same Beetle?

No, and that's worth knowing up front. The Beetle is no longer in production, so we run used examples and the available colour, trim and age depend on what's free for your dates. We don't guarantee a particular colour or car, but we do check the one we hand over so it looks and drives the part. If you want the convertible or a specific look, book early and ask, and we'll do our best to match it.

What do I need to rent one and how are tolls handled?

You'll need a valid driving licence, and visitors should carry an International Driving Permit alongside their home licence, with a passport and visa entry for the paperwork. Salik tolls are handled through the tag already fitted to the car, so you won't be chasing gate charges separately on a short trip. Any traffic fines during your rental are passed on to you as the driver, the same as with any hire. We deliver and collect the car wherever suits you in the city, so pickup is as simple as the booking.
