Seven seats for the price most companies charge for a five-seat crossover is the whole reason to look at this car. We rent the Toyota Veloz 2023 in Dubai with 250 km a day included, which is enough for a family doing school runs, mall trips and the odd airport pickup without watching the odometer. It's a compact MPV built on a small 1.5-litre engine, so the honest question isn't whether it seats seven. It does. The question is who those seven seats are for, and where a frugal little people-mover stops making sense.
The Veloz fits seven on paper and in practice for the right load. Two adults up front, two or three kids across the middle, and a couple more in the back works for short hops around town. Put two grown adults in that third row and the conversation changes fast. Knees go up, legroom goes down, and an hour on Sheikh Zayed Road becomes a complaint. Treat the third row as occasional seating for children or short trips, not as full-time space for six adults.
The trade-off lives in the boot. With all seven seats up, cargo room behind the third row is small, enough for soft bags and shopping, not a week of hard suitcases. Fold the rearmost seats and you get a proper flat load space that swallows a big grocery run or two large cases plus strollers. So the real Veloz is either seven people and almost no luggage, or five people and a usable boot.
| Engine | 1.5-litre petrol |
|---|---|
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 7 |
| Power | 106 hp |
| Fuel tank | 43 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4475 x 1775 x 1700 mm |
| Ground clearance | 190 mm |
| Colour | White |
The 106 hp matters more here than in most cars, because it's pulling a seven-seat body. Empty or with two people aboard, the Veloz is fine for city speeds and merges. Load it with a full family, luggage and the AC working hard in summer, and you feel the engine working for it. Overtaking on the E11 needs planning rather than a stab of the throttle, and steep ramps with a full cabin ask the CVT to dig in. None of that is a fault. It's physics, and it's why a small engine in a people-mover rewards a light right foot.
The 43-litre tank pairs with genuinely thrifty consumption, so refuelling rarely interrupts a week. Around town a family can expect to fill up roughly once a week of normal driving, and fuel here is cheap enough that the running cost barely registers. This is the Veloz's strongest argument: the cheapest practical way to move a family of five or six around Dubai for a week.
A parked Veloz in a July car park is an oven, same as anything else. The front AC is strong for the cabin size and pulls the front rows down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving with the fan up. The honest caveat is the third row, where air takes longer to reach the back. If you're carrying kids in the rearmost seats on a 45-degree afternoon, start the car and let it run a minute before everyone piles in. Park in shade or a basement when you can and the cabin is far kinder to get into.
Ground clearance of 190 mm is generous for a compact MPV, so speed bumps, mall ramps and the lip into a villa driveway don't worry it. At 4.4 metres long it slots into Marina towers and mall bays without the stress a full-size seven-seater brings, and U-turns are easy. This is a car you can actually park in Dubai, which is more than you can say for a big SUV in a tight multi-storey.
A few Dubai rules sit on the renter, not us. Salik tolls run on your account as you pass the gates, and any RTA fine during the rental is yours to settle. Seat belts are required in every seat, all seven, and children under four need a proper child seat, which matters a lot in a car you're renting precisely to carry kids. We can fit a child seat on request, so flag it when you book.
For a DXB or DWC pickup, the Veloz earns its keep when bodies outnumber bags. Five passengers and a moderate amount of luggage with the third row folded is comfortable. Seven passengers plus their suitcases is the one combination it can't do, so for a full crew flying in with a week of cases, plan two trips or book bigger. On the highway it cruises happily at legal speeds with a light load, it just won't feel eager when fully packed.
Rent the Veloz if you're a family of four, five or six who wants seven seats available cheaply and mostly drives in and around the city. It's the value pick: more seats than a crossover for similar money, easy to park, light on fuel, and honest about what it is. If you regularly carry six or seven adults, or need real luggage space with every seat full, size up to a proper seven-seat SUV like a Fortuner. And if it's only ever four of you with no third-row need, a smaller crossover or sedan will drive nicer and cost less still. For the family that lands in the middle, the Veloz is the smart, frugal choice.
