We hand over the Toyota Rush 2024 at your door in Dubai, usually within one to two hours of booking, and it tends to suit one specific renter: the budget family that mostly drives four or five up but needs two extra seats now and then. It rides high, it parks easily, and it carries the Toyota badge that makes a week's rental feel low-risk. That's the case for it. The case against is just as real, so the rest of this page is about whether the Rush actually fits your week here, or whether you should size up to a proper midsize SUV.
Toyota calls the Rush an SUV, and it looks the part, but underneath it's a compact, rear-wheel-drive seven-seater built on a light body with a small engine. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder makes 102 hp through a four-speed automatic. That's enough for a family of four moving around the city. Load all seven seats plus bags and you'll feel every one of those horses working, especially pulling onto a fast slip road. Think of it as a tall, practical runabout with occasional-use rear seats, not a powerful off-roader.

The third row is the reason most people pick a Rush over a hatchback, so be honest with yourself about it. Those two rearmost seats are fine for kids, short hops, and the school run with a couple of extra children aboard. Adults can sit back there for a quick airport drop, but knees-up for a long drive to Abu Dhabi isn't comfortable. The middle row slides and the seatbacks fold, so for everyday use you'll likely run it as a roomy five-seater and only raise the back two when you need them.
This is where the seven-seat trick costs you. With all three rows up, boot space behind the third row is small, enough for a few soft bags or the weekly shop, not a stack of suitcases. The honest setup for an airport run with luggage is five people and the third row folded flat, which opens a genuinely useful load bay that swallows two or three large cases. If you've got a full house of seven and everyone's flying in with checked bags, the Rush won't do both at once. That's the moment to look at a larger SUV.
In a Dubai summer the cabin sits at oven temperature after an hour in the sun, so the first question is how fast the AC recovers. The Rush has a single front air-conditioning system with strong front vents that pull the front of the cabin down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving. What it doesn't have in most trims is dedicated rear-row vents, so the third row stays warmer longer on a 45°C afternoon. Park in shade where you can, drop the windows for the first minute to dump the trapped heat, and the front and middle rows cool quickly enough.
Around town the Rush is easy. The high seat gives a clear view over traffic, the steering is light for U-turns and tight multi-storey bays, and at 1695 mm wide it slips into parking spaces that a bigger SUV has to fight for. The 220 mm of ground clearance means speed bumps, raised driveways, and steep mall ramps don't worry you.
On Sheikh Zayed Road it's a different story when you're loaded. Empty or lightly loaded, the Rush cruises at highway speed without drama. Full of people and bags, that 1.5-litre engine and four-speed gearbox work hard to build and hold pace, and overtaking takes planning. It's a competent city and suburb car that copes with the E11, not a relaxed long-distance highway cruiser.
The small engine is the payoff for the modest power. Expect somewhere around 14 km/l in town and closer to 16 on the highway, so the 45-litre tank gives you a comfortable 600 to 700 km of mixed driving. For a week of school runs, mall trips, and the occasional longer drive, you're filling up once, maybe twice. That's a real saving over a thirsty midsize SUV, and it's the strongest practical reason to rent a Rush.
A couple of Dubai basics to keep in mind: Salik toll gates charge automatically and those tolls are the renter's responsibility, as are any RTA fines that come in during your rental. Children under four need a proper child seat by law, which we can fit before delivery.
Rent the Toyota Rush if you're a family of four or five who wants a cheap, dependable, high-riding car for a week in Dubai and likes knowing the extra two seats are there for the odd day you need them. It's ideal for city living, school runs, mall parking, and easy clearance over speed bumps.
Skip it if your seven travellers are all adults, or if seven of you are arriving at DXB with a pile of luggage, because the Rush can't carry a full load of people and cases together. In that case a larger seven-seat SUV earns its keep. And if it's just two of you running around the city, you're paying for seats and height you won't use, so a hatchback makes more sense. For the family in the middle, the Rush is one of the most sensible small rentals on our fleet.
