The mileage deal, and what it's worth

The Rush comes with 6,000 km included, and that figure covers the whole rental rather than resetting every day. For a week of school runs, mall trips and the odd airport pickup, that's comfortable with room left over. Stack in a couple of long days out toward Al Ain or Hatta and back, and the pool starts to look smaller than it did on day one. Go past it and every extra kilometre costs AED 3.0, a steep rate next to what a lot of the fleet charges, so it pays to keep half an eye on the odometer rather than assume the allowance stretches forever.

You can book this one from age 21, which opens the door to renters a lot of competitors turn away for being under 25. There's a no-deposit option too, alongside the standard deposit route, so you're not automatically locked into holding a chunk of cash for the week. Seven seats sounds generous for a car this compact, and the honest read is that the third row is there for children or a short hop across town, not two grown adults heading down the E11 for an hour. Luggage is where the small footprint shows. Running cost, heat and the cabin

The 1.5-litre engine makes 103 hp, sent through a 4-speed automatic that's a generation or two behind the CVTs and six-speeds most rivals now use. It shows on a hard merge onto the highway, where the gearbox holds a gear a beat longer than you'd expect before the car picks up pace. Settled into steady traffic or cruising at the limit, none of that matters and the Rush is relaxed enough for ordinary Dubai driving.

Toyota's own figure for this car is 16.3 km/L, which works out to roughly 6.1 litres per 100 km, and on a 45-litre tank that's a claimed range near 730 km. Real Dubai driving, AC running hard and stop-start traffic through the week, will use noticeably more than that claimed number, so treat it as a best case rather than what you'll actually see on the gauge.

Cabin space is modest, which cuts both ways in the heat. There's less air for the front vents to pull down once you're moving, so it cools quickly, but a small cabin left parked in direct July sun also heat-soaks fast, and you'll want a minute with the doors open before climbing back in. The 220 mm of ground clearance handles speed bumps and mall ramps without drama, but this isn't a 4x4. There's no low range and no all-wheel drive on offer, so keep any desert plans off this car entirely.

Who should rent it, and who should size up or down

Rent the Rush if you're a small family who needs a seventh seat for the odd trip, a school pickup with an extra kid in tow, or visiting grandparents for a week, and the rest of your driving is ordinary city and highway use. It's the cheapest way into a genuine seven-seat Toyota, and for that job it does exactly what's asked of it.

Size up if you need the third row for adults on a regular basis, want real luggage space with all seats occupied, or you're planning a run out to the dunes. A body-on-frame Toyota with proper 4WD, like the Fortuner, is built for that and the Rush isn't trying to be it. Size down if you never actually need more than five seats. A Corolla Cross or a similar compact SUV will cost less to run and park just as easily, and you won't be carrying two empty seats around all week for a trip you're not taking.
