Toyota Raize 2023 - start from 117 AED / day

If you want the high seat and the commanding view of an SUV without paying SUV money to run one, the Toyota Raize 2023 is the sweet spot, and we rent it in Dubai with a no-deposit plan so you can take it without a big hold on your card. It's a genuinely small crossover that drives like a city car but sits you up where you can see over traffic. The case this page makes is simple: the Raize suits a solo driver, a couple or a small family who want the SUV stance, the easy step-in and the extra ground clearance for Dubai's ramps and speed bumps, all on running costs closer to a hatchback. The catch is the tank and the cabin size, and I'll cover both.

The SUV view, in a car-sized package

The Raize's real trick is its 200 mm of ground clearance paired with a tall, upright body. You sit high, you see further down the road, and you look over the bonnets of the small cars around you. That clearance also means you stop wincing at the things that make low cars cringe in Dubai: the steep lips on mall entrances, the harsher community speed bumps, the dipped kerb into a villa driveway. None of it is drama in the Raize.

Be clear about what it isn't, though. This is front-wheel drive, built for tarmac. It's happy on a graded track or a firm beach approach, but soft sand and real dune work need a proper 4x4. For everything a normal Dubai week throws at you, the height is reassurance, not off-road licence.

A note on the engine: some markets get a 1.0-litre turbo, but the Raize we rent here is the 1.2-litre three-cylinder making 87 hp, so that's the figure to plan around.

A tiny tank that still goes a long way

The 36-litre tank looks small, and it is, but the 1.2-litre engine is light on fuel, so the maths still works in your favour. Combined economy sits around 16 to 18.5 km per litre, which gives a realistic 550 to 650 km between fills. For most renters that's one fuel stop across a week of city driving, sometimes none on a lighter schedule. The small tank means a fill-up costs little each time, and Dubai fuel is cheap to begin with, so the Raize is one of the cheapest crossovers you can run for a week.

The flip side of a small, frugal engine is pace. With 87 hp and a CVT, the Raize is relaxed rather than quick. Around town it's perfectly brisk, but plan your overtakes on Sheikh Zayed Road rather than expecting a sudden surge when you ask for one.

Parking and threading the city

At just over four metres long and 1.71 wide, the Raize parks like the small car it is underneath. Marina tower bays, mall multi-storeys and tight street spots are all easy, and the upright body makes it simple to judge where the corners are. The light steering and tidy turning circle take the effort out of U-turns on the wide arterials. You get the visibility and step-in height of an SUV without the bulk that makes bigger crossovers a wrestle in a packed car park.

How it copes with the heat

A small, tall cabin cools quickly, which is exactly what you want when the car has been sitting in an open lot at 45 degrees. The Raize's AC pulls a baking interior down to comfortable within a few minutes once you're moving, and the front vents are strong. Vent the worst of the trapped heat through the windows for the first half-minute, switch to recirculate, and it settles fast. Rear passengers draw cool air from the front rather than dedicated outlets, which is standard for the class and fine for the school run, a little less generous with the back bench full on a long afternoon.

Luggage and who fits

Five seats up, the boot takes a pair of large suitcases plus the day bags that ride on top, which covers a couple or a small family on a week's holiday. Fold the rear seats and the space opens up properly for a flat-pack run, a stroller and a big shop, or sports kit. Inside, two up front are comfortable and two adults in the back are fine for city distances. A fifth adult on the rear bench for a long airport transfer is where it gets tight, on both shoulder room and boot space if everyone packed a full case. For that load, a larger crossover or a sedan with a deeper boot is the better call.

Before you set off, the usual Dubai rules: Salik tolls and any RTA fines are charged to you as the renter, seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and a child under four needs a child seat, which we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Raize 2023 if you want the high seating, the clearance for Dubai's ramps and bumps, and the look of an SUV, all on the running cost of a small hatch. It's ideal for a solo driver, a couple, or a small family who do city miles and light highway runs and value an easy, elevated drive. Skip it if you regularly carry four adults with full luggage, if you want real off-road or dune capability, or if you spend your week overtaking on the highway and want strong pull. For everyone wanting the SUV experience without the SUV bills, the Raize is the smart pick.
