If your week in Dubai means a school drop-off, a grocery run and an airport pickup that has to swallow everyone's luggage, the Toyota Highlander 2022 is the kind of car that just gets it done. We rent it across Dubai with payment sorted on delivery the way you prefer, card, cash, wallet or transfer, so nothing holds up the handover. It's a three-row, eight-seat SUV with a 3.5-litre V6 and all-wheel drive, and it earns its keep as a dependable family hauler. The real question this page answers is simple: does your family and your bags actually fit, and when should you size up or down instead.
This is a family SUV that works hardest in the middle of the range. Two adults, three kids and a week of mall runs, beach gear and the occasional in-law: that's the Highlander's natural fit. The middle row is genuinely roomy, the cabin is quiet on the highway, and the V6 has enough pull that a full load up Sheikh Zayed Road never feels like a struggle. You're not buying a luxury badge here, you're getting space and reliability that hold up over a long rental.
Where people get caught out is the third row. It's a real seat, fine for kids on a 20-minute hop to the mall or a hotel, but two adults back there for a 90-minute run to Hatta will not thank you. Use it as occasional seating, not daily adult seating, and the Highlander makes sense. Need both back seats filled with grown-ups for a week? Look at a full-size SUV instead.
This is the decision that matters most, so be honest about it before you book. With all three rows up, the boot is about 453 litres, enough for a few soft bags or a stroller and the day's shopping, not a stack of hard airport cases. Folding the third row opens it up to roughly 1,370 litres, which is where the Highlander shines for a family of four or five who don't need every seat.
For a DXB or DWC airport run with seven people and their suitcases, that's the conflict you have to plan around. You can seat the people or carry the cases, not both at full count. My usual advice at the desk: if it's five passengers plus luggage, the Highlander is ideal with the third row folded. If it's a genuine seven or eight with bags, do two trips or size up to something like a Nissan Patrol or Toyota Land Cruiser.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 3.5L V6 petrol |
| Power | 295 hp |
| Drivetrain | All-wheel drive |
| Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
| Seats | 8 |
| Fuel tank | 68 litres |
| Fuel economy | approx. 11.8 L/100km city, 8.7 L/100km highway |
| Range | approx. 575 km city, up to 780 km highway |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,950 x 1,930 x 1,730 mm |
| Ground clearance | 203 mm |
| Cargo | 453 L (3 rows up), up to 1,370 L (3rd row folded) |
The V6 is thirsty by small-car standards, but the 68-litre tank means you're not chained to the pump. On a normal week of city driving and a couple of highway runs, expect to fill up roughly once, maybe twice if you're doing daily long hauls. Remember Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you as the renter, so budget for those on top of fuel.
A large three-row cabin takes longer to cool than a hatchback, and Dubai summers push past 45C, so this is worth knowing. The Highlander's AC is strong and there are rear vents that reach the second and third rows, which is exactly what you want with kids in the back. Parked in the sun, give it a few minutes with the fans up before everyone climbs in; the V6's output keeps the system pulling hard once you're moving. It copes well, but no SUV this size goes from oven to cool in 30 seconds.
At just under five metres long and nearly two wide, the Highlander is a big car to thread through Marina side streets and tight multi-storey bays. The reversing camera and sensors help, but you'll want to pick the wider end bays at malls rather than fight a narrow slot. The 203 mm ground clearance clears speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping, and it has enough composure on E11 and Sheikh Zayed Road that overtaking with a full load is easy. AWD adds grip in the rare wet spell, though this isn't a serious off-roader; it's a road SUV that handles a graded track to a desert camp, not dune bashing. Seatbelts are required in every seat and a child seat is mandatory for under-fours, easy to fit given the space.
Rent the Highlander 2022 if you're a family of four or five who wants room, quiet and a third row for occasional use, with luggage space to match when you fold it down. It's the sensible middle choice in Dubai: more practical than a five-seat crossover, far cheaper to run than a full-size body-on-frame SUV, and dependable for a week or a month. If you regularly carry seven or eight adults with luggage, size up to a Patrol or Land Cruiser. If it's just two of you doing city errands, you're paying for space you won't use, and a smaller crossover will save you fuel and parking stress.
