The Toyota Corolla Cross 2024 is what you rent when you want everything about a Corolla except the low seating position. The engine, and how it drives

Under the raised body sits Toyota's familiar 1.8-litre 2ZR-FBE petrol, a naturally aspirated four cylinder making 140 hp and 172 Nm, sent through a CVT automatic to the front wheels only. There's no hybrid and no all-wheel drive on this generation's petrol Corolla Cross, so what you're renting is Toyota's simplest formula: one engine, one gearbox, one driven axle. The CVT does its best work exactly where Dubai traffic asks the most of it, holding a smooth, steady pull away from a red light instead of hunting through gears. It's not quick, and we won't quote a 0 to 100 time here, since the figures floating around online belong to a different, hybrid version of this car.

Ground clearance is 160mm, which sounds like SUV territory until you compare it with an actual one. It's barely above a Corolla sedan and well short of a Hyundai Creta's 190mm, so speed bumps, kerb cuts and mall ramps are no issue, but sand tracks or a rutted Hatta shortcut are a different question entirely. This is a front-wheel-drive hatchback on road tyres wearing a taller body, not a 4x4.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

The boot holds 407 litres, enough for one large suitcase and a couple of soft bags, or a stroller and the weekly grocery run without folding a seat down. Push the rear bench flat and the load floor opens up for flatpack furniture or the extra bags a family picks up mid-week. The taller body also means less bending to load a case than you'd get with a regular sedan boot.

In the back, two adults get a comfortable ride on a 2,640mm wheelbase, with enough width across the bench that a child squeezed in as a third for a short airport hop won't complain. Put a fourth full-size adult back there with everyone's luggage in the boot, though, and the car shows what it actually is: a raised hatchback, not a three-row SUV. A couple or small family doing school runs and the weekly supermarket trip has comfortably enough space. Four adults with cases is tight, and you'd be better off a size up.

The mileage deal, fuel and cabin heat

Toyota quotes 6.4 litres per 100km on the combined cycle, but that's a lab figure. Run the air conditioning hard through a Dubai summer in real stop-start traffic and 8 to 9 litres per 100km is the more honest number to plan around. The 47-litre tank still gets you roughly 550 to 600km between fills in ordinary city use, so most rental weeks mean one stop at the pump. Salik tolls and any RTA fines land on the renter, standard across the fleet.

The cabin cools down faster than you'd expect from something wearing an SUV's silhouette, mostly because it isn't that large inside. The front vents pull the temperature down quickly once you climb back in after the car has sat in the sun, and vents built into the back of the centre console mean the back seat isn't just living on air blown from the front. Give it a minute with the windows cracked first if it's been parked for hours at 45 degrees, same as with any car this size.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Corolla Cross if you want the Corolla's reputation for starting every time, with a higher seating position and an easier boot to load than the sedan gives you. It suits a couple or a small family doing city driving, school runs and the odd trip to the airport, the kind of renter who would rather not think about the car at all. In Silver, it's about as low drama a rental as this fleet offers.

Look elsewhere if you're regularly carrying four adults with full luggage. The back seat and boot both run out of room at that point, and a mid-size SUV handles the same trip without anyone negotiating legroom. Skip it too if Hatta or the dunes are on the plan. At 160mm of clearance and front-wheel drive only, this is a tall hatchback, not a car built for sand.
