Toyota C-HR 2023 - start from 123 AED / day

Style or space: that's the real question with the Toyota C-HR 2023, and it's the one most rental pages skip. We hand over this small Toyota crossover across Dubai with payment sorted however suits you on delivery, cards, cash, or a wallet tap at the door, so you book it without funding the rental upfront. What you're really deciding is whether you want the most distinctive-looking compact in this class, or whether you'd be happier with the plainer, roomier alternative. The C-HR leans hard into the first. Below is what that bold shape gives you, and what it quietly takes away on a week of Dubai driving.

What the C-HR is good at

This is a five-seat economy SUV with a 2.0-litre petrol engine making 152 hp, driving the front wheels through an automatic gearbox. It pulls 0 to 100 km/h in 8.2 seconds and tops out at 180 km/h, which is more than most people expect from a car this size. On Sheikh Zayed Road it has enough in reserve to merge and overtake without drama, and it settles into a 120 cruise happily. The steering is tighter than the class average, so it feels keen on a Marina slip road rather than just adequate.

The look is the headline: sharp creases, a coupe-style falling roofline, hidden rear door handles up in the C-pillar. Parked next to a Corolla Cross or a Kona, it's the one people glance at twice. If you want a rental that doesn't look like every other beige crossover at the valet, this is the obvious pick.

The catch: rear space and visibility

Here's what the styling costs. That dropping roofline and high window line eat into the back of the car. Two adults fit in the rear, but tall passengers will brush the headlining, and the small rear glass makes the back seat feel closed in. For two kids on the school run it's fine. For a fourth adult on an airport run, it's a squeeze they'll notice on anything past twenty minutes.

The same shape hurts you behind the wheel. The rear pillars are thick and the back window is shallow, so over-the-shoulder visibility is genuinely poor for this class. Lane changes on the E11 mean leaning on your mirrors and the blind-spot warning more than you would in a plainer car, and reversing into a tight Marina bay, the rear camera does most of the work. If you reverse-park by eye, this is one of the harder small crossovers to judge.

Luggage: will your cases fit

The boot is around 377 litres, mid-pack for a small crossover. In real terms that's one large suitcase plus a soft bag, or two medium cases if you pack carefully. Enough for a couple's week in Dubai or a small family's mall and grocery runs. It is not enough for four people flying out of DXB with a full case each. If that's your trip, the boot is the spec that should send you to a sedan or a larger SUV. Fold the rear seats and you free up plenty for sports kit, but then you're back to two seats.

Running it in Dubai

Fuel is where the C-HR earns its keep. Expect around 7 litres per 100 km in mixed city and highway driving, a touch more if you sit in summer crawl with the AC working hard. On the roughly 50-litre tank, that's comfortably 600 km between fills, so a normal week of errands and a couple of airport runs won't have you at the pump more than once.

Cooling matters here, and the C-HR handles it well. The small cabin works in your favour at 45 degrees: the AC pulls a parked car down to bearable in a couple of minutes and cold not long after. There are no rear air vents, but the compact cabin means back-seat passengers still feel it. Leave it in covered parking when you can, since black dashboards in this city get brutal by mid-afternoon.

On clearance, the C-HR sits at about 148 mm, normal hatchback territory. It clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping if you take the steep ones at an angle, but this is a road car, not one for desert tracks. Leave the off-road plans to a proper 4x4.

A couple of practical points for any rental here. Salik gates charge automatically and those tolls are yours to pay, as are any RTA fines during your hire. Seatbelts are required in every seat, and children under four need a child seat, which we can add. On size, parking is the C-HR's friend: short enough for tight multi-storey bays and U-turns, with the only awkward part being that rearward sightline we already flagged.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the C-HR 2023 if you're one or two people who want a sharp-looking, cheap-to-run automatic for a week of city driving, mall trips, and the occasional highway stretch. It's quick enough, sips fuel, slips into small bays, and turns heads doing it. If you regularly carry four adults, haul a full set of airport luggage, or you just hate fighting poor rear visibility in traffic, this isn't your car. Pick a Corolla Cross or a similarly practical compact crossover instead. They give up the C-HR's drama and get back the space and clear glass it spends on looking good.
